Post F10 M5 won't get new 5 series multifunction instrument display in immediate future

BMW has announced a new optional programmable multifunction instrument display for the F10 5 series.

Some of you may be wondering if this will be available for the upcoming 2013 M5 which starts production in July. It is not.

It's no surprise that this new display won't be an option for the 2013 M5 as it did not appear in the 2013 Ordering Guide. BMW NA has confirmed this and says that it won't be available for the M5 in the immediate future.

Booo! Not a single F10 M5 has been sold to a U.S. customer yet and BMW is already failing to incorporate the latest advances into the vehicle. 2013 M5s are 2012s with expensive (and IMHO essentially useless) optional B&O Audio and carbon ceramic brakes. We deserved something more after being forced to wait a year longer than the rest of the world for this car. This is how BMW treats its largest M market.

I'd wait for the M6 Grand Coupe, which will surely incorporate some of the newer bells and whistles, but by the time it actually gets delivered to a U.S. customer I'll probably be on social security!

Yeah I am more annoyed by lack of full individual leather and ceramic controls. From an interior perspective, this M5 will be a downgrade from my 12 550i.

How long would be considered as "immediate future"? I could understand not having in on the 2013 US-release of the M5 but could make it on the LCI?

There was an earlier post a few pages back regarding 2013 m5 electronic changes for July. Does this have something to do with it? Seems to coincide with the 5 series changes...

Here's the post...

So does anyone know the details behind this?

Per the Canadian M5 product planning guide material.

"Please note that BMW USA announced availability of the M5 Sedan in the U.S. market as a MY2013 as of July 2012 production. BMW Canada’s M5 production will follow the same model year schedule. Also note that there is a material change expected to the M5’s vehicle electronics as of July 2012 production. The change will not impact the output or performance of the M5. Additional details of the change will be available in the later part of Q2 2012. With the model year and vehicle electronic changes expected as of July 2012 production, please ensure your customers consider this information before placing an order between 03/12-06/12 production."

Thanks.... What in the world is it!

A fellow Canadian member stated he has been able to add a leather dash in addition to the full individual leather option upon placing his order. Let's hope that indeed is the case.

If LCI is indeed for MY 2014 (which logically seems to be the case based on prior model cycles), it may make sense to wait it out considering a lot of new features may become available (full LED headlights, square corona AE rings and revised headlights, touch-pad Nav, revised speedo, steering wheel, tail lights, etc.)

I think that LCIs usually are introduced in the fifth year of BMW's seven year model cycle. If I'm correct, that means that the LCI 5ers should be MY15 models, likely introduced in the spring or fall of 2014.

I guess you are right, my thinking was predicated on the 5-series GT which was a 2010 MY, though the F10 technically came in a few months later as a 2011 MY. I am hopeful that the GT and F10 LCI would come at the same time, which in the 5-series GT case would be a 2014 MY (yr 5 of 7).

One thing BMW is keeping an eye on is increasing market share of competitors, particularly Audi (in the US largely, though also globally). If the F10 starts getting long in the tooth and the relatively newer A6 is continuing to have strong sales, an accelerated 2014 MY LCI may be quite possible.

There's no reason that BMW would tie the release of the updated dashboard in the F10M to the F10 LCI. I would bet that we'll see this new dash in the MY14 M5, whether or not the LCI happens then or not. Case in point, a new generation of iDrive was introduced to many cars, including the E92, in MY09 -- the E92 didn't get its LCI until MY11.

Reminds me of the e60 M5 release. The 06's were for a short time to NA (I think), the 07's were full on, then 08 refresh came out for May delivery. The 09's were a short build because the 2010s brought in the new CIC.

Its always really hard to perfectly "time" the M vehicles because BMW's rate of change and technology rollout is massive. If I could have just one M5 it would be a 2010 but mine was an '08. While I don't think the F10 will go through a refresh in 2014 I do feel it will get some of the newer tech features. I am pulling the trigger for 2013 - just order blindly and go!

Well considering the M5 and M6 don't even have the existing "full black panel" cluster that comes on F10s with HUD, I'm not too surprised at this. Yet another reason to wait a few model years before buying, I guess.

What are square corona AE rings - how do they differ?

And are there also new tail lights announced for the regular F10?

Not sure about that. In the case of the LF-A it was quite the opposite. They had to go digital because the analog dials couldn't keep up.

Now what about the updated navigation announced for the 5 series... Will that be on the 2013 M5? All of these changes will make me seriously consider if I want to wait!

The squared off angel eyes can be seen on the LED option for the F12/13 6-series and F06 6-series GC, as well as all F30 3-series and the LCI E71 X6-series. The poster is guessing that the F10 LCI will include this change, though seeing as how the F01 LCI isn't going to have squared off angels, I doubt the F10 LCI will either.

As for the tail lights, nothing's been announced. But again, seeing as how the tail lights didn't change for the LCI E84 X1-series, it may not change for the F10 LCI, either.

I am not convinced we will ever see the new display in an M5. I am not sure it makes sense in a sports car.
