What would you do if you lived in New England
I am debating what to do in the spring. I have 2 ideas and I was looking for some input. Things to consider. I will only have one car so it will be a daily driver. I also live in New England so I will be driving in the snow.
Option 1 order a 2013 M5 for Euro delivery in the spring drive it year round. Option 2 Order a 2013 550 M-Sport Xdrive and a 2013 Ducati 1199 Panigale S. The 550 will be great for New England and bike will be the go fast toy. Not that the 550 is slow by any means. But the bike will sit in the garage all winter and not be used. Opinions???? |

I've ordered my M5 and it'll be here in two - three weeks...but I also have a Ducati 1198. I think you could have the M5 and the Panigale, I plan on a Panigale as well...but next year. I want to get next year's model so they have time to work out the kinks.

This will be my third M5. All have been driven 364 days a year. Maybe one day a year it is a issue with the right snow tires.
Did I mention it is really cold, snowy and icy in Minnesota? |

People that buy 550s are usually not in the market for an M5 (unless it isn't available). They just don't care.

When I read the heading for the thread, I didn't see the option 'move.'
Seriously though, if having all four wheels connected to the drivetrain is important to you, perhaps an Alpina B7? At the end of the day, it won't be much more... |

OP, You didn't mention if you already have a bike, or if you are new to riding, etc. You also didn't mention if this is due to financial reasons or some other reason, so I'm assuming financial as cost of 550i and a Panigale is reasonably similar to just one M5. If I am wrong here I do apologize in advance.
I'd say if you already have a bike, get the M5, then new bike when you can. If you don't have a bike, and you are an experienced rider, get the M5, and then the 1199 Panigale S when you can. Alternatively, you can sell something (children, assets, etc.) and get the M5 and the 1199 Panigale S at the same time. Seriously though since winter is coming up I'd get the M5 and by spring time figure out how to also get the 1199, seeing as you are in New England and won't use your bike much over the coming months. If you don't have a bike, and you have not ever owned a bike, get the M5, and a used Ninja 250. Anymore on this topic would be off-topic so I stop here. Bottom line - if I were you I would want the M5 and the 1199. Not a 550i M Sport, and that's a long-term decision that will haunt me. If it were *me* I cannot tolerate being bikeless (get withdrawal symptoms) and therefore I'd get the M5 and the 1199 Panigale S, and just eat it somewhere else. You can even finance the 1199 and really it should not be too difficult to cut back $100/week spending somewhere to make the payment a wash. If it's not a financial issue I can't comment |

Owning a motorcycle is nuts. Everyone crashes eventually. My wife's uncle killed himself 3 months ago.

Since the GF is buying, just get the M5. I'm assuming she's buying since she's dictating to you how to spend "the [your]" money. But seriously, if you've achieved an M5 level of income, surely you could come up with M5+Panigale financing.

I have a Diavel ... before that had a K1200R. I made sure I had a bike "grandfathered in" before getting married. I wasn't doing track days so now if I want to start that up again, or get another track bike, I get "well you weren't doing that before we were married and I didn't sign up for that" from the wife. As the British would say, Bollocks! So if I had to do it over again I would have grandfathered in the track days, too! Just sayin' after 3 years of marriage that's what I would have done. But hey we're all different and if you're willing to give up one or the other, it's your choice. If it were my situation I'd grandfather in the bike and then work the wife (GF in your case) on getting an M5 next time the car topic comes up. Also bikes are high up on my list of must-haves so I'm going ahead and voting option 2. I am deciding between a Panamera GTS and an M5 right now / over the next few months. My Diavel stays, though. M5 is a LOT cheaper than my comparable Panny GTS build, so that's the main thing drawing me to it vs. the Panny; both are amazing cars though. |
