What's the downside? Is it the vibration?

I take back my comment on the M6 wheel. After driving an M6 for a large part of the day, I really like the wheel.

There are different base wheels depending on what features your car is equipped with. For US cars with DA and Executive, you need the wheel with the heating element and mounting for the vibration generator.

When he says vibration, he's referring to the vibration generator for blind spot and lane departure warning.

BMW's fitted with heating, vibration, or both have a control module inside the steering wheel. It's a standard part across many different chassis codes, from the F01 to the F30. On the F12/F13 M6 and the F30 M Sport (which share similar steering wheel designs) this part is a different shape with different connectors.

BMW has not released this part for ordering in the US or globally. Yet. I'm in final stages to get this released for ordering. I finally have one (which took an act of god) for a 100% complete retrofit. Without it, you will throw faults.

And as a caveat emptor, in general... don't rely on parts people just post. I realize this troll just posted about 85% of what you need to prove some stupid point that his mate beat me to this (which he didn't) but part 32307845795, the airbag, is the ECE version. You need 796 in the US. The igniters and airbag stages are different, and you probably wouldn't be protected at all in the event of an accident.

That's why I did it. It'll get me used to it by the time my M6 GC gets off the boat.

troll what a polite insult are you Swiss?

indeed, if you note my profile I'm in the UK so the parts are correct for me, we did one of the first SMG paddles onto tiptronic 10 years ago on road fly so this isn't new territory for us I'd rather be remembered for being first on the moon than some steering wheel change that a first year intern could do!

The module you refer to is available on TIS now and is orderable in the UK but there is atleast in Europe a difference in the harness which should be available soon. note though, atleast in Europe the parts are already being revised for 03/13 not sure why yet.

the part number for the vibration module, is 32337846021 I don't have either feature in my M5 and I can't therefore test so beware on this issue, the downside which is you loose the speed limit function, which I find useful.

Cheers,
Neil.

oh I meant to add, our guess on why the parts are changing is is that the real M5 version of this wheel has different buttons with the LIM button... but it's pure speculation.

It's not a harness, it's a control module. You need it if you have heating, vibration, or both. Otherwise it's not necessary. Coding is not required.

This module wasn't in TIS originally, nor was it orderable. You have me to thank for that as it just appeared in the November/December catalog. I did this retrofit back in October.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Enjoy your new wheel. This retrofit is really quite simple once you have the correct parts.

I ordered my M5 with nearly every option and unlike some other manufacturers, BMW offers similar equipment in other countries. I wish there were more for me to do but there isn't. I remember back with my VW/Audi cars retrofitting things like lane assist and active cruise control, or a 4Motion drivetrain swap.

Hmm... AWD M5. That would be neat.

yup dead simple wth no Unavailable parts or other nonsense. Just fired up my july TIS VM - so the module above has been in TIS since the July update when the M6 convertible was launched in Europe!

Share and Enjoy.

Having driven the M6 for the past 2 days, I have found I really don't like the seats. The M5 seats are way better.

Making me wonder whether I should nix the M6GC plan I had and just get another M5 post LCI.

Honestly it hasn't been. My dealer couldn't find it. BMW's online TIS didn't either. I had to have a tech friend take the wheel off a new M6 car to find the part number for me.

I've been doing this for years so I know where to look. It wasn't there.

Not worth arguing really. We all got what we need in the end. I'm happy with the wheel and the end result.

Curious observation. I haven't had any seat time in the M6 but I think you and I share similar thoughts on these things.

I doubt I'll buy another M5 unless the LCI changes are compelling. I'm nearly done retrofitting seats with side bolsters to the car. Just waiting on the last parts to arrive.

interesting, I had a M6 cab for a few days and thought the seats were bad also, just couldn't find a setting that made me feel comfortable.

You are like a one-man factory! Unbelievable.

I had 2 issues with the M6 seats - they are noticeably firmer, and narrower. The size and shape is a bit like our old F10 seats (e,g the bolsters are less effective than on the M5 (if they fit your body) and M3), but the firmness level is very similar to an M3.

I would consider the M6 a noticeable step down in comfort with these seats. Otherwise it is a fantastic car in Coupe form - feels a bit lighter and slightly easier to manage on track (I spun the M6 less than the M5). That said I think the longer wheelbase and increased weight of the GranCoupe will take away these advantages.

I'm doing a full DIY with pictures once I'm done. This is one thing I definitely want to share.

It's a peculiar omission on BMW's part for sure. As are a few other things.
