Torn Between Two Transmissions! DCT or MT

I just did a search here on the board on "DCT vs MT",...and honestly the posts made by you gents did not help! That is,...those in the DCT camp really appreciate what the DCT has to offer,...and equally, those in the MT camp are steadfast with their decision of opting for an M5 with a MT. As a slight reference, I'm currently piloting a 2012 550XD with the M-Technic Pkg. It's loaded to the gills with options that I really appreciate. Color: CB,...which is also nice. That aside, I've been away from a MT for many years as I may have stated in another post,...and my heart leans towards the DCT,...especially since many here have stated how freak'n smooth it is. I've driven a MT M5,..in fact, I drove two 2013s,...and the biggest adjustment is having to "think" and be more involved in the "go fast" process. This is one thing that all of the MTs owners seem to really like about the F10 MT M5. There's only one DCT equipped M5 in the area,...in Rockville,...in the showroom and pulling it out of the showroom for a test drive probably wouldn't sit well with the Used Car Manager. The other car,...at least the color combo that I like is in the Atlanta area. It too is priced right and loaded,...except B&O sys. So, there you have it.

Man! This is going to be a hard decision,...as I'd hate to buy one and wish that I had bought the other. That said, I know that I'm the only one that can make the decision on which to buy!

Thanks guys,...you've been a great help! LOL! JK....

I'm in a similar position, but looking at the 991 GTS 7mt vs. PDK. I simply drove them back to back and whichever one left me with the biggest smile made the decision for me. In the GTS' case, the 7mt is simply sublime and so much fun. The PDK was somewhat boring for me. And it will be a weekend car for me so I'm not concerned about traffic.

Unfortunately each situation is unique since every driver's needs/desires are unique. Is it a daily driver? Will you be driving it in traffic? Any physical limitations? That's why you get differing opinions.

Maybe get a CPO DCT M5 and another fun car that's a little better suited to a manual?

IMHO, the DCT is a perfect marriage for the F10 M5 and I have not read a negative review; however, I have read some less than stellar reviews on the manual and someone on this forum even regretting getting it. But I have not driven the manual so I do not speak from experience.

Bottom line, drive both and pick what makes you happy. If you call ahead of time and tell the SA you are serious, they should take the car out of the showroom for you. If not, they are a poor sales person. And definitely make a drive to test drive both. Either way you're getting a fantastic car.

^^ Exactly what he said

I have never read a post or review from someone who went DCT and regretted it and wished they would have gone 6MT. However, i have seen multiple bad reviews and even a member here state they regretted getting the 6MT because it just wasn't the right transmission for this car.

IMO, I think the F10 M5 is just too large of a car to be rowing your own gears. For the record, I have never driven a manual F10 M5, but I do currently own a 6MT R8 V10 and I love it, but that car just works with the 6MT.

For me this is quite simpe...DCT is the perfect and only combination with this engine and this type of power...To get the most out of the car I think you need the DCT because manually shifting will just slow you down...Just my opinion though

I believe most people complain that the MT F10 M5 has a not so great gear/rev ratio for optimal shifting..

I would spend some time driving a manual and than a DCT..

Personally I think the DCT would be hard to beat!

Really depends on what are you looking for .

And what mods will you be doing
Power you will be adding

-Dct limited to 700whp tune
Over 700whp youd have to break the bank with dodson clutch $5500

-Manual you can have the car at over 750whp on stock clutches
A little rearer for me since you will find more dct everywhere.
Short shifter makes a little more fun shifting also

Both are fun but I pick DCT . FYR I am a manual guy who has driven manual cars for over 30 years... If you were asking about M3/M4 my answer was 100% MT but M5/M6 are big and heavy cars plus the gearing ratio of DCT in first gear (where the fun is starting ) is much more aggressive than MT

Just went through the same thing...

MT guy here - as much as I wanted to like the MT - it just doesn't work in this car. Ordered DCT - delivery in April.
