Windshield/Insurance

Anyone here replace an F10 Windshield? How much does it cost? Is it any different if you have HUD?

Im curious because I just switched my insurance to NJ from CT and there is no full glass coverage. Im trying to see if its worth lowering my comprehensive deductible (raising my premium) to cover this.

And while we're on the subject, anyone care to discuss coverage? I feel like its time maybe to make some changes as theres a lot more to lose now than when I was 24. Just curious what type of coverage people have, especially in NJ, which seems to run their car insurance a lot differently from CT.

One thing I found very interesting was the mechanical failure feature Geico offers which is essentially an extended warranty which they say usually goes above and beyond a dealer extended warranty. You have up until 15 months of ownership to add it and i think it ran $180 annually on my C63, which equates to $720 in premiums before it would kick in.

I have not replaced the windshield on my F10, but did (twice) on my E60 which also had the HUD. I recall it being something like $1,200 - $900 for the glass and $300 in labor. The HUD windshield has a prism embedded in the glass that the HUD projector reflects off of.

My deductible covered the windshield replacement on my wife's X5M with HUD, and we paid $250.00 to USAA.

If you're considering GEICO's mechanical breakdown coverage it is a God send! I used it when my dealership purchased Audi Extended Warranty didn't cover my HID replacement because of condensation (water) damage. I wish I kept GEICO as my insurance carrier but my wife is active duty military and switched our policies to USAA. Shop around because BMW's Extended Warranty and Maintenance coverage is pretty good as well.

Good luck,

Will

Thanks - this is what I was looking for. Im going to assume for the F10 its even more now, so might be worth it to pay a bit more in premium to have a lower deductible on comprehensive.

Thanks Will

I just called Geico to quote me on the Mechanical Breakdown for the M5 and its $79 per 6 months. Turns out that if I crack the windshield, I can claim it through mechanical breakdown and pay just the $250 deductible on that. What's even better is it covers lighting like you said - but even for broken headlights/tailights covers due to rocks. It will cover the vehicle above and beyond the dealer extended warranty for up to 7 years or 100k miles. No brainer in my opinion.

As someone who has to replace his windshield I can tell you it's appr 900$
You could also order the #51317333835 which is the European Comfort/Climate Windshield , list price is 959.34
One thing I can tell you is that it takes a LONG time for the windshield to show up.
I've been waiting for mine since late November and it just arrived last week at the dealer....
Also make sure you order the correct windshield depending on options/configuration
ie
Lane departure warning S5ADA=Yes
Head-up display S610A=Yes
SPEED LIMIT INFO S8THA=Yes

Ordered my 2nd windshield last week. Autolite needs to come up with some stronger aftermarket glass. Small car spits up a small object on the freeway and pop, instant star. 2 hours later, its cracked half way across.

First windshield was ordered March 19th and received it on May 6th. When I ordered the 2nd one according to my parts dept. there were 19 windshields in the US for F10 M5's.

This is getting old...

I replaced mine last week - BMW OEM glass. Was only a 2 day wait to have it shipped to California.

Yes the initial batch of windshields took 3 months to arrive (mine broke in November and I got my replacement in early April)
It is certainly under quite some stress and if a rock / object hits the black portion of the windshield you'll get a crack in no time.
I opted for the european comfort glass over the "standard OEM" one , not sure if it's any more durable

Comfort glass huh? Wonder if it's any stronger... I may be able to change my order, but would have to wait I'm sure for it to be shipped from Germany. These windshields are way too brittle.

Are standard 5 Series F10 windshields not compatible with the M5? Or are F10 windshields not regularly available overall?

Yeah the comfort glass will likely take longer to arrive, also have to make sure your dealer is ordering the correct windshield as it would be a bummer if the wrong one comes in
Don't think it's any stronger than the "standard" glass , just offers better heat protection
Also has the side effect of toll passes only to work in the designated cut out and radar detector mounted on the inside to likely perform slightly less sensitive

The comfort glass windshield (also known as "Green stripe climate comfort windscreen")
will help to keep the cabin at a lower temperature (~10c) by reducing the effects of direct and indirect sunlight

It uses a layer of special reflective material to reflect certain wavelengths of sunlight:
- Infrared radiation is not allowed to enter the cabin
- Regular natural light is able to pass through it

The green stripe at the upper edge of the windscreen prevents the sun from shining directly onto the driver's and passengers face

Nope the M5 is using the "regular" F10 windshield, just must ensure it's ordered with all the correct options such as HUD, Speedlimit info etc

Or one can always have a spare one sitting at the dealer , or just revert back to OEM glass
Well in my case I take my chances and hope I won't need a new windshield in a long time...
