Cool The BMW F10 M5 Experience by Chris Harris [Video]

EVO has posted a great video review of a preproduction F10 M5 by Chris Harris, filmed in the Swedish winter. If you'll recall, EVO previously posted a bit of a teaser clip and article in which it was confirmed that the new M5 will have at least 555hp (that's the output of the X5 M and X6 M) and that "there's a seven-speed DCT dual clutch transmission with three different shift speeds and a fully automatic mode.

This video gives us a better sense of the visceral experience of the F10 M5, along with some additional reactions by Chris Harris. Here's some cliffs notes on the video, and the video is below for your viewing.

  • M dynamic mode requires countersteering
  • Hopes the production car has a bit more noise because the preproduction car is a bit lacking in noise. But he was assured there will be more noises when the time [production version] comes.
  • Sometimes the twin turbo engine sounds a bit like a flat plane engine, a bit like a Ferrari 355, without the voice boxes.
  • Car has much much broader appeal due to much better fuel economy, bigger fuel tank, and the DCT transmission.
  • The car through its 3 settings for each of the chassis, transmission, and steering, can offer three very different characters.
  • Is it fast? In a word, YES (see his reaction to the acceleration)!
  • Will have more power than the X6M/X5M.
  • Will have class leading performance.
  • IN SUM: Feels like a successor to the E39 M5 and not the E60. That means it's a better all around car.

The F10 M5 will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. In the meantime, here's our full coverage on the Concept M5.

He changed cars halfway the video, one had black headliner and a red driver's seat, the other had all black seats and a grey headliner. I think it'll be a monster.

OMG.

OMG. I cannot wait. This thing looks like a bar-raiser (both meanings)! The performance, the sexyness. OMG. The M5 has always been my favorite car and from what I hear, it may be in the $120K range out the door? That's scary, but if it maintains similar price regions with the outgoing E60 M, I may see myself in one in about 5 years

it will be nice if it can beat the panamera turbo around the track. straight line will be hard because of lack of awd but I really hope this ends up being the best luxury sport sedan on the market (like m3 in the compact sport sedan market) - otherwise porsche would have beaten bmw at its own game.

very much looking forward to it!

well if they start at $100K before options they might be in trouble as Mercedes just announced the new CLS will start at $95,000 and that is a much sleeker looking car, something that will compare more to the M6 four door coupe if its ever produced but at less cost than the M5? I know its only got 518 horsepower, but power isn't everything, it will still get from 0 to 60 in 4 - 4.1 seconds, could be the same as the new M5.

I would love the M5 to start at the same $95K becuase that means I could hopefully get a used one for $70K in a few years. if its pushing $120K loaded it will be out of my used bracket.

yes, very strange, and there was a short hair guy sitting behind him and in teh end a long haired girl/guy? strange they would even have a M5 with a gray headliner, I would think they would all be standard anthracite.

I would guess these are test pre production vehicles.

No way in hell, I don't think you fully grasp how much larger the F10 is than the E60. I can tell you since we have an F10 in the family, they are enormous which is great because there is a ton of space inside but it is kinda annoying when it comes to parking.

To give you an idea, the E60 M5 was right around 4,000lbs and the F10 550i is already in the 4,400lbs range with an auto so expect the M5 to be even more than that.
