Coolant smell on start up
I have a question to determine if it's a problem or not.
I have a 2013 M5 with 30,000 miles with Dinan Stage 1. I get a coolant smell on the first cold start of every day. It's a smell that dissipates after I leave for and doesn't seem to return until the next cold start the next day. Do I have some sort of problem? I have not noticed any leaks on the ground nor in the engine bay. I also have noticed that the coolant levels for the turbos seem to always be low. Any advice you can provide would be helpful. |

there was a recall for the coolant lines some time ago. The heat from the engine was expanding the fittings/hoses and causeing coolant to leak. Happened to me, went to BMW and they fixed and covered it under warranty.

Did they wrap the coolant lines for the fix like the others suggested?

Okay, is this what is should look like with the coolant lines wrapped? With those that have had this fix, do you get a slight smell of coolant at cold start?

I posted the thread with pictures of the recall done. Yes, my car has had the recall and that's what it looks like. No, I do not get any coolant smell.

Okay, thanks for responding. I must have a small leak somewhere and will get it looked at since I am still under warranty.

Okay, I am reporting back from my original post. Brought my vehicle in to get the front and rear strut and spring assemblies replaced per SIB 330113.
At the same time I had them investigate why I am smelling coolant at cold starts. They pressure tested the system and found no leaks. The results of the test were 17-00-509(2) 17-11-48-00 PS. I have no idea what that means. They told me I must be smelling something other than coolant at cold start. |
