The tax is insane. I know that in Jordan they charge up to 150% of MSRP in customs fees. So the $250,000 would be about right there too.

Wow.
It's not just tax. BMW Australia have jacked the price up well above what can be explained by tax alone, so the total price is about 2.5 times the UK price.

I think it is because Australia uses the metric system. I'm reliably informed that making a right hand drive speedometer in km/h costs at least $100,000.

+1, for example - a X5M on road is 190k+. The M5 will be around $230k I would say.

X5 M: $86,400
X6 M: $89,500

I am thinking the new M5 will be around $85,000 or little less.
If that's the case then I will definitely pull the trigger.

I have three kids to put through school and two to buy cars for and an M5 isn't one of the considerations, at least not at those prices. But I'm not going to lie; I have a hard time with the concept of spending more than $50K on a car, at least as long as one can get a perfectly fine vehicle for $50K.

Well, considering the fact that this M5 is two-cars-in-one (a luxury family sedan + Super car performance with a touch of the "M" button) it is a bargain IMO.

who wants to settle for "a perfectly fine vehicle" when there are things like the M5 out there?

you got to pay to play...

You're completely missing 'tizzyd's' point - example as follows:

M3 Coupe UK - £54,595
M3 Coupe US - $58,900

Currently £54,595 = $88,000 (what we in the UK effectively pay in US$)

88,000 minus 58,900 = 29,100 - that's how much cheaper the car is in the US.
