Paid in Full
Question for those of you guys that paid for your M5s (or any other car) in full from Day 1, when do you get the title? Does the dealer have it for you if you stipulate you are paying in full at delivery? Or do you have to wait regardless?

They can issue an MSO within a week. We then submitted tge paperwork to the DMV and the state of Montana took 2-3 weeks to issue title (although I got registration same day we submitted papers).

I paid my car in full prior to getting delivery, though I had gone through ED (European Delivery). The car was shipped in the month of October; I dropped it in Nice, southern France and it arrived stateside beginning of December. Got it registered in NY State 2nd week of December which collected the sales tax. It took a month from that time until the title was sent to me by mail. So you have to have the car registered in your State and it is you State DMV that will issue the title. My car dealer did not have any hand in it.

I think that you'll find that car titles are a state by state thing since they are issued by the state, not by the dealership.

While State is responsible for issuing title, it is dealer who is responsible for getting the MSO and bill of sale to the state or to the titling agency. Ensuring this trigger is pulled is important since it can cause delay. My dealer took 3 weeks after re-delivery to trigger this process and had to issue me 2 sets of temporary plates.
So it is important to be on top of dealer.

Ok so I will still need my dealer to work with the DMV to get this done. Thanks, not for the M5 but for my wife's Jeep we just bought.

In Florida you don't even get a paper title, held electronically on my last two cars. And I don't recall anyone giving me the option. When I sold my last car I had to fill out a request for title to get them to mail me a paper copy.

In Missouri, I had paper temp tags from the dealer for 30 days. I had to then go to the DMV and pay sales tax to get the plates, my paper title was issued from the state and came in the mail roughly 3 weeks later. Dealer gave me the original title as part of the paperwork when picking up the car. I had to turn it in however to the state for them to issue the new one.

I think it would be much faster if you leave the Dealer out of the equation as the Dealer would probably take his time to do the paperwork. In NY State all is needed is the Bill of Sale and payment receipt which is readily available from the Dealer -- you could ask the dealer for it right away if he is a local dealer. For me, I bought the car out of (NY) state and had to call the dealer to have the original bill of sale sent to me via FedEx which the dealer did right away as I made calls almost everyday to follow-up. Once I got the Bill of Sale, (I already had the payment receipt), I went to the NY State DMV to present it and pay the sales tax (based on the car payment receipt) and signed all paperwork pertaining to registration. I got the car registration sticker right away and was told to wait in the mail for the car ownership title (they told me around 2-3 weeks). The title came at about the time they stated. Best thing is to inquire what your State DMV require you to present to get the car registered.

Texas claims four to six weeks. Took three weeks from when we submitted the paperwork.
