First Drive: Chris Harris Getting Sideways in Preproduction F10 M5 - DCT CONFIRMED!

First Drive: Chris Harris Getting Sideways in Preproduction F10 M5 -
DCT CONFIRMED!

What makes for a great video? EVO's Chris Harris and a pre-production F10 M5 on snow surely isn't the worst thing to start with. Following two F10 M5 teaser videos on M-Power.com last week, this video shows Chris Harris getting sideways in an F10 M5:

There's also some more information on EVO.co.uk. BMW apparently confirmed with Chris Harris that the new M5 will have at least 555hp (that's the output of the X5 M and X6 M) and that "there's a seven-speed DCT dual clutch transmission with three different shift speeds and a fully automatic mode. This is a huge relief after earlier reports hinted at an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Some more highlights:
Quote:
"Yes, the near-insanity of the old V10 makes way for slightly reduced throttle response, but it’s marginal. On a Swedish lake, you can still make tiny adjustments to sustain that all-important 1km drift."

"Switch it all off and you have a circa 560bhp, rear-wheel-drive saloon with an LSD. If you can’t enjoy that, you’re a wally."

"For all current and recent E60 M5 owners know this: the new M5 has a gearbox as fast as the E60s that also works properly in Auto mode. It has a bigger fuel tank than a regular 5 (somewhere between 70 and 80 litres, but they won’t say exactly what – I’m cleverly guessing 75) which with the much improved economy gives a real range of 400 miles. So: range, gearbox, torque – BMW has listened, all of the E60’s vices have been sorted."

Head over to EVO for the full review and some pictures.

I was just going to say that.

As soon as I heard it, first thought in my head was "STi".

Screw that. E60 M5 sounded amazing. This sounds good, but no where near amazing. I swear I liked the E60 M5 (with an exhaust) sound better than most other exotic cars.

"To me this car feels like its DNA has been drawn from the E39 M5."

To me that says it all, and in a good way. I am a huge proponent of High-Rev NA engines in ///M cars, but over the last few months, I have slightly soften my stance to only for ///M3, the rest of the ///M line is pointed at a demographic that needs a everyday executive sedan as much as a track car / weekend racer, something that can be a little less jerky, and "raw", especially when arriving at meetings and transporting clients and colleges.

I think this will be winner.....not that my opinion is worth anything.....

Cheers,
e46e92

You all clearly read over:

"Does it make enough induction noise? No. But this isnít the finished car, the BMW M-gurus insist that the final product will be different in this respect."

but I agree, the car driven in the video is way too quiet under load for an M5, let's hope they really let it sing.

IMO, a vaccum cleaner is more like it with all the hissing and buzzing, but being a turbo car that is to be expected. As far as I can remember, that F10 sounds like a 4 banger Neon SRT-4 to me, seriously.

Hmm, that isn't exactly giving me a warm fuzzy. A good DCT like the one in the M3 is much faster than the old SMG II box in the M5. If this thing really has a DCT, it should be able to bang out shifts that make the E60's feel like they are coming from a circa 1970s Powerglide transmission.

I like what I hear about the "three shift speeds" though. The crazy Drivelogic setup they use today is overkill and adds needless complexity. It sounds like they are simplifying which is good news.

"range, gearbox, torque"

I have no issue with the gearbox or torque in my car. I'd much rather have a high revving low tq engine than some turbocharged vacuum cleaner :/

Wonder what the final production car will look and sound like. Didn't really like that sound but maybe they are really playing us right now, hopefully

The M5 used a SMG III box, not SMG II which was in the E46 M3.

Shifts in DCT type boxes are fast as shit provided, and here is the caveat, that the appropiate gear is preengaged. When it isn't, the box has to first prepare the gear and then shift.

So, if you take "shift time" as the time it takes from when you press the level to when a different gear is engaged, then:
SMGIII is *much* faster when an unexpected gear is ordered.
DCT is significantly faster when the expected gear is over.

SMG III can shift at 65 ms. That it had a shitty auto mode (read: that people didn't understand what the gearbox was and were disappointed when treating it as a slkushbox) does not take away from the fact that it was extremely fast.

To the best of my knowledge, both E92 M3s with DCT boxes that have run in the "Lightning Lap" of Car and Driver have had issues following commands when used in the track. Read the reports the same people did about the SMG III equipped cars (M5/M6) and you'll see there are no such issues.

I guess the problem is that SMG III is fantastic at a track, but the real uses of M5s and M6s are strolling around town...

Well, everyone else's whining about the S85's torque gets us all to this point.

The range extension is a fantastic idea though. I wish they had given the E60 M5 a big gas tank
