well put. i agree 100%

F1/SMG/DSG is fine for old people, awful drivers, and hardcore track nuts who only care about lap times.

Give a real manual and let the driver's make the difference!

Good to see that M Division can still surprise with choices.

I wonder what the take rate is for the F10 550i and 535i 6MT?

Excellent news!! Personally I don't really care if I can shave off a few tenths of a second on my 0-60 time with the new super fast automatics, I'd rather be able to shift gears myself.

It's nice to have 6MT as an option...however I did not enjoy my E60 M5's 6MT. Car was just too big and bulky to enjoy unlike a smaller peppier 1 or 3 series (as someone mentioned earlier)

Props to BMW though...

The car has been engineered with the M-DCT being the priority transmission.
The M5 is at it's most optimum with the M-DCT.

You can't have a manual transmission and a button for an E-brake -_-

You're right, this was true with the E60 M5 because people quickly realized that it was a terrible match with the V10. The 7spd SMGIII was a way better fit but BMW succumbed to the US(only) market demands. With the F10's TT V8 gear selection will be far more forgiving than in the E60's NA high revving engine and the 6spd will work much better in that car.

However, with the E46 M3 the 6MT split was 50/50(SMGII vs 6MT) and it looks like it will be at least 40% MT on the E9x M3's. So there is still plenty of BMW enthusiasts that are serious about keeping the MT alive.

You know, there's nothing quite like manhandling a big car with a stick shift. My left knee still hurts though lol so I think this would not be for me either.

??????
what I mean when i say that the ///M5 is not a luxury car is that before they started selling the e36 in a sedan form, the ///m3 has always been to me a sports coupe; and should always be a coupe. Now i'm not bagging on e90 M3's I love them and of course they are much more practical, but I would prefer the coupe if I could afford one. the M5 in my eyes is the original M sports sedan and I'd like to leave the luxury to the 7 series.

Big kudos to the M boys for remaining one of the few European marks who retain a conventional manual transmission on high performance cars, hopefully it is not US only this time though

This a very good thing.

Well done to BMW for bringing this back - hopefully its for all markets in the world rather than a rush-E60 job for the USA.

Guess they weren't kidding when they were trying to get this closer to the E39 M5 rather than the E60 ay?

Is the manual transmission a North American option only?

If I had the scratch to buy this car, I sure as hell wouldn't get a 6MT with it. Sorry, but I agree with others...keep the 6MT for the smaller cars. When was the last time you saw a Fezza with a 6MT? And when was the last time you heard a Journo complain that the car would be better off with one?

Maybe this sounds crazy but as another mentioned what if it is a 7speed manual. I heard that porsche was going to implement this, maybe BMW will too and that's why the shifter is in camo???

+1, but with this and the 1M having MT I believe in BMW M more than in the recent past.

Love live the Kings (BMW and MT).
