![]() Featured on BIMMERPOST.com I just came back from the IAA in Frankfurt, Germany. When I arrived, obviously the first thing I did was rush to the ///M zone on the BMW stand to check out the new BMW M5. It's GREAT!!!, the car is put together so incredibly nice!! Below is an explanation of the underhood of the F10 M5. Here's an even more detailed explanation of the F10 M5 engine: http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=588858 And here's official specs/data of the S63Tu motor: http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=548345 As luck would have it, I ran into a BMW buddy of mine I know from racing in Europe. He showed me around the car, kicked some kids out of it so could finally get behind the wheel LOL! And he answered all the questions I had. First of all the engine bay looks unfamiliar....You cant really see the engine block itself, its covered by two strange looking boxes in front of it and by inlets, tubes and the plastic ///M cover on top. With all this stuff in front and on top of the engine it strikes me that the engine its self is set really far back and low in the engine bay. Here are the questions and answers I asked my BMW friend: Question: What is underneath the ///M cover? My BMW guy did not want to take it off...for obvious reasons in the middle of the ///M stand with all these people around. But after asking 5 times, he took it off, under one condition: That I wouldn't take pictures.... ![]() The ///M cover covers two turbos that you can't see because of the heat shielding and some strange looking piping. Question: What is this strange piping running 2 the turbos? Question: What are the two strange looking boxes in front of the engine Answer: These are the Air/Water Heat exchangers, cooling the compressed air coming from FROM the turbos on it's way to the cylinders. Question: How does the airflow travel from the inlet to the cylinders Traditionally the air is cooled by an intercooler before it reaches the turbo and enters the engine 'hot', this brilliant design by BMW get cool compressed air to the engine to maximize performance. Further: Love the Head up Display!! I'm missing the carbon/plastic reinforced roof....Nothing a nice carbon look rap can't fix. Don't like the black crossbars you can see through the front kidneys. I'm gonna spray paint the silver or gray.

Wow. Is it just me, or does this seem like a overly complicated system?

Feel like those turbos are going to run extremely hot in that location. Hens why most manufactures put turbos on the side/bottom of the motor.

I thought BMW came out and said that turbos were water cooled, not oil cooled, in a video recently?

Turbos run extremely hot, Oil would be able to withstand higher temps then water. You don't want to get water vapor in the engine cooling system and turbos run at 300+ deg. Celsius, so for them 2 b water cooled the ///M5 should have a separate pressurized water cooling system on the turbos to eliminate any bubbles forming. Anybody? ![]()

very nice write up... thanks for this insight-- this engine is just too monstrous! As impressive as this engine may be, there's a lot of things that can go wrong. I'll opt for the extended warranty

you are right junior. ANother thing to keep in mind, water can withstand certain temperature before turns into gases; thus the idea of keeping it oil cooled is better.
However, that being said, I am assuming there will be somewhere a warning in the Owner's Manual reminding the driver to leave the car on for good 5 minutes before shutting it off when arriving to destination; just to cool the oil a bit. If anyone can shine in on this. ![]()

They are water cooled, made by honeywell.

The above image is looking at the engine without the top plastic shroud, one cat and turbo removed exposing the CCM and all the associated plumbing on the other side. There is a huge stainless cocoon of a shroud that covers all the exhaust components. The ECU and other computers are also water cooled on a separate circuit.
There are three radiators and two water/air intercoolers.... there is a lot of cooling! |

Thanks for the info
Are you sure? I can't think of 1 car where the air goes through the intercooler before hitting the turbo's. |

What's up with those rings on the exhaust headers/downpipes?
Wouldn't it be a good idea to Ceramic thermal coat those downpipes? And do those HUGE cat's come off easily from the turbo's?
