Clunk sound from F10 M5 rear on bumps

I would just like to emphasise at this point that this noise/issue has in no way affected my view of how awesome this car is.

And, much better response from BMW than their response in relation to the infamous DCT lag issue (which was a safety issue no less) on my early build M3.

For me it's a major flaw when driving on uneven roads, it is a big comfort issue. Releasing an already developed, stiffer new coil 1 year after the car is produced is in no way a prompt a response or a customer care. Everyone is different, but if I knew that I would have to drive 1 year with bung/dongs all day long on these roads I would have thought twice before buying this car. Myself and my car contributed much knowledge by frequent, heavy test drives on bad roads and disassembling most of components inside and outside the rear of the car, all to finding where this sound was coming from and communicating with BMW over telephone, emails and dealership.

If the new builds are not coming with the replacement springs, I may pass on my number one order at my dealer. I'm not buying a new car with defective springs only to have the rear end taken apart three months after delivery.

BMW needs to install new springs in all new builds as of right now. Anything else is shoddy business. And the argument that they need to use up an inventory of existing springs is bogus. They are finding the dump one way or another.

Yes very disappointing for such a flagship car from a supposed reliable car manufacturer to have such a problem, especially when this car costs $240,000 USD here in Australia

I can't believe how much you have uncovered for them over this short period of time. BMW M ought to pay you an allowance for road testing their M5

I get my car in about 10 days it just arrived in port, I hope I don't experience this clunk as I live in a more rural setting but from the sounds of things its almost a given.

Depends on the roads you drive in, all cars are equipped with bad spring coils.

Got 3 questions

2) They've been test-driving my car on very deep and rough roads for 5 days now to help find the sound (I'm very upset about it), do you think this would shorten lifetime of components or overall well being of the car? They drove about 1 km of very bumpy holes at average speeds every 2 hours, trying different setups. Shall I lodge a complaint or do you think it's nothing to worry about for a new car?

3) I saw that they had taken out whole rear part of the car, seats were taken out and split apart (rear and lower parts of back seats were separated), the way from rear to trunk was opened for a technician to lay down and diagnose the sound, protective covers in the trunk and under the rear mirror were removed and many car's details were analyzed separately. Basically they've screwed with everything that was in the second half of the car, interior, exterior and drivetrain. They said it's nothing to worry about and that they will put everything back as it was in factory. But having seen my car at such condition has given me a feeling of buying a "broken, used and heavily exploited" car. Basically my car arrived with a flaw that required severe exploitation to identify the problem, and even then it wasn't identified and it has only 500 km on it. My question is, is it true that the dealership can never assemble parts back the way factory did? I'm considering lodging a complaint straight to BMW because I wanted a fresh car and seeing intestines and ugliness of a disassembled car gives me no peace of mind.

I'm very frustrated and upset, the forum was the only place to ask for an advice. Thanks for reading and for any recommendations.

I have the rear suspension clunk, I heard it the first day. I will get the dealer on it at first service.
My car was built week of March 26th, so as of that date BMW has not addressed it at the factory level.

This is great news I'll have to order it too, and many others it seems. Big thumbs down to BMW for this, and not addressing this until 2013.

Since U.S. production has not started yet, BMW should install the newer stiff coils for all upcoming production runs including the 2013 M5 for the U.S. that are scheduled in July. If many of us start a mail in campaign, maybe BMW will consider putting the new coils the soonest. BMW has now known the problem for sometime and I am sure has already done tests, otherwise its credibility is at stake and surely Audi will take over and be known as the "better" machine.

All I know is that people who replaced stock springs with aftermarket ones like AC Schnitzer don't have the sound anymore. I'm just sitting and waiting for BMW to give out a solution since they acknowledged the problem.

I believe it will be fixed in the 2013 model year. You live in Colorado so you are safe. 2013 will be what comes to the US, even in sept.

Hi,

My car was delivered about 2 months ago. Mileage so far about 5000 km. Started to notice the sound whenever going over a speed hump/bump the past 1 month. Didn't notice the problem on my E92 M3. I will start complaining to my SA today.
