1200 mile service

Hi guys
how many miles do you think is acceptable for 1200 mile service. I just had mine done and it had 12 extra miles. I think this is excessive. Why do they need to drive it ? it is only oil change, diff fluid change and Ecu flash

Probably to make sure that there are no odd noises from the diff after the change at various speeds, under various turning angles, etc. Plus the car can also take a while to warm up, and letting it warm up by idling isn't ideal since that only warms up the engine, not the gearbox, diff, brakes, tires, etc. I don't think 12 miles is too much at all.

I disagree. I think 12 miles is excessive. It dont take a good mechanic to make a proper judgement on the work with a couple of miles. I think they had a chance to let it unwind and that is what they did. Just my two cents. I brought in my 550 in for service and I always mark down my mileage. They were not supposed to take my car off the lot for the work performed. End result, one of those idiots curbed my expensive azz aftermarket rims and denied it. I showed them my starting mileage/ending and they still tried to deny it. And yes, I bitched out the rep who stood up for him. I don't take my car there anymore. Sorry about the rant as it is still fresh on my mind since I had to spend money to fix their mess up.

^ Perhaps. But I guess my overall perspective for the OP is this: Even if 12 miles is excessive, what do you hope to gain out of raising an issue? And more than that, if there's no visible damage to your car, what are you even worried about? Sure, IF they took your car for a bit of a ride then obviously they shouldn't have because it doesn't belong to them -- and if you can prove they did, then sure, nail them to the wall. But if you can't, keep in mind that at the end of the day, 12 miles aren't going to hurt the car even if they were 12 hard miles. These cars are built to handle hard driving, so as long as there's no evidence of damage or outright abuse (e.g. smoked tires), your car is fine no matter what -- especially considering any high-RPM driving would have taken place AFTER the 1200-mile service was performed.

Don't get me wrong, I love my car and want to make sure it's well taken care of, but I also drive it hard and know that the car can take it, so for me there are larger things in life to worry about than whether someone else MIGHT have driven my car the way it was built to be driven anyway, even if I didn't authorize them to do so.

Better to live with a few extra miles on your car than raise hell, turn out to be wrong, and then be known as "that guy" with your SA and the techs working on your car IMHO.

yep your right. I guess I just don't trust these guys after they scratched my wheel. I will go through this again as I still have 400 miles to go til my 1200 mile checkup.

Thanks for all the feedback, to me it is a matter of principle, that they should not drive any car more than is needed for the actual service being done.
Most of us that own these kind of cars care about them and treat them like a kid so it always hurts when we think that they were abused. Having said that, life is too short to worry about the small stuff

Most dealerships have a standard route for after repair check, and perhaps this dealership incorporates city street and freeway into their test, and it comes out at 12 miles? Might just depend on where the dealership is located, but what the heck, they probably don't work on many M models and a quick run up to redline won't hurt the car any, you do it don't you? Wheel damage is a whole other matter though....! I might take a digital picture of my wheels when I drop it off, with a mechanic in the picture!!

Oil change and diff fluid change require no driving. Fill it up to spec and be gone.

same here they added 3-4 kms max

In Edmonton, AB {Canada} the dealer does a through check-in inspection and marks and damage and makes you sign for it. Basically like a rental car in reverse. Never have a problem that way!

Has anyone had your dealer complete the 1200 mile service below the 1200 miles or tell you they can complete it within a certain range? Had mine in yesterday for a creaking noise on the driver side door. Was driving me nuts and couldn't wait another couple hundred miles to get it fixed. I had 941 miles when I dropped it off. When I picked it up my SA said they went ahead and completed the 1200 miles service since I was so close. I'm not complaining by the way.. Just curious. What really changes when they complete the service by the way?

I think getting the 1200 mile service done at 941 miles is fine. There is a lot of talk that the "full amount" of power is somehow unlocked during this service but personally I think it's Internet mis-information; mine has always had this much power.

Just had my 1200 mile service done and they drove it 3 miles and as soon as I got it back I drove it like an M5 on @ 5 hr energy drinks....... Launch control is wicked.....

Yes, ok to have service done early. Not much changes except that you can now safely drive above 5k RPM. Launch control is supposed to be reserved until after 3k miles, though it is unlocked at 1200. I've never used mine.
