M5 / M6 Oil Pump Recall FAQ and Affected VIN List

Here is an FAQ provided by BMW to dealers on the M5/M6 oil pump issue:

Q1. Which models are affected by this Recall?

Affected are certain Model Year 2013 BMW M5, M6 Coupe, and M6 Convertible vehicles produced between July 2012 and September 2012.

Q2. What is the specific problem?

The issue involves the engine oil pump. The pump driveshaft can separate from the pump rotor. If this were to occur, the engine could experience a sudden loss of oil pressure which could cause severe engine damage.

Q3. Why are other models not affected?

It has been determined that only certain vehicles produced between July 2012 and September 2012 were equipped with an incorrectly manufactured oil pump.

Q4. How many vehicles are affected?

Approximately 696 vehicles in the US are potentially affected.

Q5. What can happen as a result of this issue?

A sudden loss of oil pressure could occur, as well as the possibility of severe engine damage.

Q6. Can the driver become aware of the problem?

Yes, if the vehicle experiences a sudden loss of oil pressure, a low oil pressure warning indicator is displayed in the instrument cluster, along with a warning message in the control display.

Q7. What corrective measures will be taken?

The engine oil pump will be replaced.

Q8. How did BMW become aware of the problem?

BMW became aware of the problem through its quality control procedures.

Q9. Is BMW aware of any accidents or injuries associated with the Recall?

No.

Q10. Can customers continue to drive their vehicles?

We recommend that owners of affected vehicles do not drive their vehicle until this Recall can be completed.
If the vehicle experiences a sudden loss of oil pressure, carefully pull over to the side of the road and shut off the engine.

Please contact BMW Roadside Assistance at 1-800-332-4269.

If you are not the only driver of this vehicle, please advise all other drivers of this important information.

Q11. How will customers be informed of the Recall?

The BMW Customer Relations department is calling owners of affected vehicles, advising to them discontinue driving the vehicle until the Recall has been completed.

Subsequently, owners will receive a letter via First Class mail asking them to schedule an appointment with their authorized BMW center.

Q12. How will the Recall be performed?

Affected customers who make an appointment will have the engine oil pump replaced on their vehicle.

Q13. How long will therepair take?

This repair may take two and a half hours; however, additional time may be required depending upon the center’s scheduling and processing. The repair will be performed free of charge by your authorized BMW center.

Q14. How many vehicles have experienced this problem?

The exact number is unknown at this time.

Q15. When will I receive my owner notification letter?

Mailings are planned for October 2012.

Q16. Do I have to wait for my Recall letter in order to have my Recall performed?

Yes. BMW is in the process of implementing the Recall Campaign to ensure that the necessary parts are at the authorized BMW center prior to sending out the owner notification letters.

I call BS on Q8 and Q14. (I'll let BarryB chime in on this one.)

Now if we could just get BMW to release a statement like this about why they built our cars without "backrest width" adjustment buttons!

I don't know if I would call it BS. I think Q14 is just saying they don't know for sure how many cars have been affected like BarryB for sure at this point. We know at least 1.

And as some have said on the subject already, sometimes quality control does unfortunately come from analyzing a catastrophe after it happens and figuring out the root cause (again, like BarryB's car).

If this list is accurate I just barely escaped this issue. But it's no telling what else is in store.

Thats ridiculous, you need to wait for your recall letter to have it performed and you cant drive your car in the mean time!
Do they plan on giving out loaners?( and hopefully something better than a 323 with dealership stickers all over it)

Ok, so my car is on the list. Sitting in Nice, waiting for a truck. So, do they let it sit there until someone can flatbed it to a dealer, or, do they run it to put it on a truck and send it to Germany, or, do they send it to Bremerhaven, and fix once at the VPC?

There was another M5 in Nice...anyone in the same boat as me? That is, on the ground not on a boat yet?

Mine's a March 2012 build and does not show up on the VIN list.

Reaction to this recall is just amazing. Someone should start a poll to get public opinion on the following questions.

Are turbocharged engines harder on oilpumps than NA engines?

If my oil pump fails, should I be cross with:
a) BMW designers
b) BMW test engineers
c) Oil pump quality control folks
d) Barry - Because of him I can't drive my new car.

Is it a bigger deal if my oil pump goes, or my fuel pump?

What individual component reliability is required if there are 20,000 parts in an assembly and only one failure can be tolerated per year per assembly?

Not found out during QC otherwise they wouldn't have released the car, BS.
(This is why the engineer was not at our M studio tour. He was scratching his head over my engine, most likely..)
Also, I pulled over within 100yards of the low oil pressure warming. Still need a new engine? So why new engine and not just oil pump.

The list is only for US bound cars ... what about for other countries ?

Only a 100 yards? I think it's enough time for the heads to heat up and crack. Imagine driving 100 yards forgetting to put oil back during an oil change.

I just got the call from BMWNA. Hang on a second while I pick my jaw up off the ground. I am just blown away. I was told specifically not to drive the car, and that they probably won't have a fix until sometime in October. He had no idea when because that haven't even isolated the problem.

I spoke to my dealer, and they don't have a clue either. Waiting to hear back from them. In the mean time

Just landed in Vegas for the weekend and had a voicemail from my dealer, no details, just don't drive the car! WTF!! At least it's at home, but what a cluster f this is going to be!!

For the time being my car is not on the list of VINs affected and neither is my selling dealer on the list, (which makes sense since my M5 is the only one they've sold). Also the service manager called BMW to double check my VIN and my salesman told me again that my car isn't affected. I'm not holding my breath but for the moment I've been given the go ahead to continue driving the car. Only 400 miles so far as I took delivery last Saturday.

Such ******* Bs, I'm on the the list with a july production date. Just was almost done breaking it in with about 1000 miles.( waited for this car for 6 months) They better give me a decent loaner, m3 would be fine. They don't even have the parts, so who even knows???

I don't mean to be insensitive to the ones who received this devastating news, but does anyone have info regarding cars scheduled for production in the near future? My car is supposed to go to production within 2 weeks, has the problem been resolved within the factory? Is production ongoing?

I sincerely feel for the ones who were affected by this. I would be livid and I would fight for compensation until no end. Best of luck to you.
