2nd car

Is anybody else struggling with a 2nd vehicle choice? The M5 is faster than most cars and a great all around daily driver, I'm not sure what to have as a toy after the F10 arrives in my garage.

I have been wanting a gallardo or a 458 but with comparable power speed it seems kinda silly.

What are you guys keeping for a weekend car or toy to play with? Preferably something that can smoke the M5 without being tuned to hurt reliability...

Actually the M5 is the second car.
The e91 AW M-package is our daily driver, and the e9 CS the extra toy.

A 458 will do the job. But a gallardo......you will regret.

I second the opinion to avoid Gallardo.

I had an 07 Gallardo.

The AWD sucks too much power at low end. The car felt sluggish. I just felt i am dragging a big ass. Not as nimble as 430.

I haven't drove the new 458 yet. So can't comment on that.

have you driven the lp560? my only experience was in a 2010 lp560 spyder and it was really fun... and 458 is light years ahead of 430, and i feel like gallardo was more fun than the 430 but agree its just not going to be very exciting when the m5 is the daily car. i want a fast convertible/spyder toy, but no 458 spyder around. any other ideas?

I dunno, if I were to buy an M5 the only second car I would consider would be a dedicated track car: light, nimble, stripped down, and not too expensive so I wouldn't be miserable if I wrecked it. If you're going to have another car for "fun but non-track" driving, does that mean you'll be relegating your M5 to nothing but driving up and down city streets and freeways? I've seen a lot of M5/M6 owners do that and it always makes me sad and confused; there are more comfortable and less expensive cars for that (like the 550i) and it's a waste of an amazing car IMHO.

I know these aren't exactly track cars (though they seem to hold their own reasonably well), but even if your M5 won't see a track, hopefully you'll at least be taking it out on twisty back roads. But if you want something faster for that purpose and you're contemplating a 458, might as well throw in a GT3RS, GT2RS, and MP4-12C -- though having caught a ride in an MP4-12C at a track event piloted by an instructor, I can tell you that people who own those cars and never take them to the track have no idea how much of their car's value and fun potential they're leaving on the table. The 12C properly driven in the proper environment completely recalibrates your sense of "fast".

don't get me wrong, i'll track the m5 i plan to moderately tune it up as well. but at the end of the day a sedan no matter how fast isn't exactly sunday drive in nice weather material, so my dilemma is what is sunday drive material that won't be disappointing to drive next to the daily driver. that's where the ferrari and lambo will be a disappointment, nobody wants to take out their ferrari for some spirited driving and get on it realizing it's slower than their daily driven sedan.

I don't think you'll be disappointed. A lot of people talking to him were asking for his thoughts compared to the 458 (which he also spent a lot of time driving before picking the 12C) and he basically acknowledged that the 458's engine sounds better and is "looser" on the track since there aren't as many electronics involved there. But he went with the 12C partly because he's a huge Ayrton Senna fan but also because the 12C's completely unique suspension design means that it can simultaneously be near-perfect for the track but also provide as comfortable a ride on normal roads as big luxury sedans; I couldn't confirm this on a smooth track, but he's not the first person to say that about it. He also mentioned he's heard a lot of reports about transmission problems with the 458. It was funny though because a student in the intermediate run group ALSO showed up in a 12C for that event, and it was even the same color; what are the odds? Oh, and the instructor's next-door neighbor apparently had also just gotten his own 12C, lol!

And of course if you want REAL Sunday driving fun, the 12C Spyder was just announced. I'm personally not a fan of verts since I can get most of the effect with a coupe and moonroof without all of the drawbacks of a vert, but it sure looks sweet.

I wish I had rich people problems like you guys!! The M5 is my dream car and would be my all around driving car, I wouldn't need anything else except maybe a 4X4. Range Rover?

r8 v10 6-speed --- the car is so nimble and the gated 6-speed shifter is pretty damn cool. Probably the same speed and power as the m5, but i'm sure the feel will definitely be different.

One more idea if you just want a weekend bruiser that will give you gobs of power: the 2013 Viper. It will apparently sticker a bit above $100K and its interior is STUNNING -- plus you get that glorious 8.4L V10 putting out 650 naturally aspirated horses and 650 lb-ft, and of course the proper transmission. I agree with the above post about the R8 possibly being a great (and different) experience from the M5, but the speeds would indeed be similar, whereas the Viper would be an even greater departure from the M5 experience-wise, and be faster, AND cost less than most of the other cars mentioned here.

There's only so much longer that you'll be able to get a naturally aspirated engine, and unless you want to step all the way up to the 599 or Aventador, this is as big and brawny as NA is going to get before it disappears, probably (and sadly) for good.

+1

My 2 choices to complement the M5 would be
R8 5.2 spyder
991 Turbo cab (if you can wait)
991 S cab (if you can't wait)

or get the S cab and trade it for the turbo when available

OR

997.2 Turbo S cab (again if you can't wait)

I admit I am biased towards cars from AG.

The non-german car I would consider is the Aston Martin V12 Vantage
A beautuful sunday car!!

GT-R can do it. Personally, I am not a fan of this car, but it is really a toy with playstation in it to enjoy

Honestly, I'm surprised no one has said anything before me. The 458 does not have comparable speed to the f10 m5. It may be in the same general power range but it is significantly faster and in an entirely different league. Also, during spirited driving u r prob gonna carry much more speed in the ferrari..u r going to be carrying more speed into corners/curves etc. If you get on either the lp560 or 458 you shouldnt be disappointed because they are indeed faster than the m5. The 458 is almost as fast as it gets. If that's not enough you've only got a few stock options. Veyron Gran Sport, GT-R, lp700, porsche turbo or porsche turbo s.

here's a video. I think at one point she even misses a gear and the 458 still walks:

i do not need a faster car, the m5 is more that i can handle speedwise. but i am also thinking of getting a 2nd vehicle, for pure driving pleasure and enjoyment. the m5 is a fantastic technological achievement, it is really two cars in one...exec limo and sport limo, all at the touch of a button. but i have the feeling that the car drives me instead of the other way around. i find myself more and more looking at youtube videos of the E92 M3, enjoy all that beautiful sound and the 8200 revs redline....
so what are my options? on top of the list is the mclaren MP12-4C, but still there is no second hand one under 150K GBP, next is Ferrari 458, but same problem...lambo gallardo LP560-4...the transmission turns me off. so porsche...991S or next gen cayman...
i am very unsure at the moment on how to proceed..maybe order an E92 M3 coupe?
