Heavy Oil Burning Issue

Is anyone else burning through oil like crazy? I have 4500 miles and my oil light is now requesting another quart for the second time.

I got the light for first time at 4000... But had the change after break in done at 2000 miles... So i guess these do go through oil.

Same here. Just hit around 4300 miles and the indicator has come on for the second time.

Is the added oil included in the BMW Maintenance Program for free?

They will top you off as part of the program. Some service advisors are providing their clients with a quart to carry in the trunk.

Wow worse than the S65 or S85 which people initially complained about as a problem and were glad the new m5 didn't have that!

Funny how variable it is. My S65 at 40k very very hard redlined miles has never burned an ounce yet some engines burn tons. Never get how much variance is in between these engines.

Agree. My burn rate so far would extrapolate to one quart per 25k miles. So I would never need a top up.

I think we need a consolidated thread/sticky for all oil consumption issues. Keeps to keep coming up and no one wants to use the search function. Not that it is required under Mechanical Maint, as 90%+ threads are about engine oil consumption.

Looks like mine doesn't need any oil either. No noticeable use after 4000mls
Looks like at least Stealth and I who did drive a lot of mountain passes during breakin have something in common
Certainly driving mountain passes (up/down) is great exercise during breakdown (varying revs, oil being sucked and pumped through the engine/cylinder during acceleration/breaking etc) .
I wonder if there's a relation to how people have broken in their cars and the oil consumption , but in the end it might just be a small percentage and still within the BMW advised range.

I am at 3,500 miles and added 3 times (630, 1700, 2700) plus the 1,200 mile service.

I am guessing it will ask for a 4th in the next couple hundred miles based on the measurement I took yesterday.

Anyway, she is going into the dealer tomorrow to try and figure out the problem.

Needless to say, this is not very comforting.

I have been adding a litre every 2000 miles although since going past 10000 miles mark it has stopped consuming as much currently at 3000 miles since last litre was added

Turns out I had a faulty seal in the oil filer cap, which resulted in a slight leak and improper venting! WTF!

Time will tell; lets see how the oil consumption goes now!
