Start/Stop

Why have cars adopted the Start/Stop buttons? Are there advantages, or just a cool thing to have.

objective is to save fuel (mainly for local high traffic situation)

Should have never put this in for the M5 ... who would care fuel economy knowing horsepower is the utmost concern to the average M5 owners

Are you referring to the engine start/stop button or the fuel-saving start-stop technology?

If this feature bothers you, you can turn it off.
As long as you have this feature turned off and turn your ignition off, M5 remembers your last setting when you drive again so that you don't have to turn it off everytime.

Im referring to the actual stop start button. Was just curious, I think its really cool, but didnt know if it served a purpose.

It does save fuel - I have it in my ML63. Since you can now turn it off and have it stay off, it is a useful feature. In city traffic, I could almost see the fuel needle go down in my old E70 X5 4.8. In those situations it is unlikely that you will be able to use the potential of the M5 so saving a bit of fuel seems like a good thing.

there is very compelling data on how many finger sprains are prevented by replacing the ignition key with a button.

I think it is designed to compliment the "keyless go or comfort access" feature.

Key stays in your pocket etc.

Apart from that and the obvious finger strain of key turning, I can't think of other advantages.

I guess every country configuration is different, mine is turned ON everytime I start the car, I have to turn it off every single time!

There are several reasons why manufacturers have moved to buttons. The first is that many people simply don't know how to start a car properly with a key. They turn the key too long and I have heard the grinding noice more often than not. A push button makes a perfect start. The second is that we are trying to move away from keys all together. In a collission you may hit your knee against the key. This is also the reason why the M5 now has keyless start and we have that small hole between the cupholders to store the key in. Some of you may not even have located it yet.

As far as the fuel saving start/stop is concerned, together with the turbo technology, the car has been developed to have much lower emissions. In my country this is rewarded with less tax on the purchase price. The new M5 is therefore about 30,000 Euro cheaper than the old E60 M5. In Europe you can't set that system to OFF all the time (in D mode), where in the States you can.
