Launch Control Help!
Ok, so I just got the M5 back from the 1200 mile SVC.. Talked to the SAs about launch control being available etc... For the life of me I can't seem to get it to work. I read the threads on it and everything on the web. Will someone who is able to get LC working please tell me the steps and what I should see on the dash or HUD that let's me know I'm in LC. Thanks!

What actual mileage do you have?
Mine was inactive even after my service until I actually reached 1200 miles, then the checkered flag appeared as it should. Steps to start LC: Throttle in S3 DSC completely off (Not MDM) Apply light brake Hold shifter forward -- you should now see a checkered flag appear on the dash |

Set everything to sport plus. Turn traction control completely off. Set trans to S3. Barely touch the brake..Just enough to activate the brake lights. Hold the shifter forward(towards the front) You should see a checkered flag on your dash board. Floor the gas pedal (all the way down) Let go of the shifter knob and you are gone! Hope this helps. Important note: Don't let the car rev too long and make sure to keep your foot planted.

I would just set those LC settings in one of the M-drive buttons for future use

When you have the 1200mi service performed, the tech needs to delete the predelivery check in the engine computer via our diagnostic computer. This is different from previous M cars, so not all techs know about it. If that hasn't been done, you'll probably get a check control message in the near future and will not be able to perform LC etc. If it has been done, just make sure all your fluids are ok (not have low oil or coolant) and make sure your engine is up to operating temp. LC isn't gentle on your car, so everything needs to be perfect before your DMEs will allow the car to go into LC

So I have heard various stories of launch control and how hard it is on engine and its not something to do unless you really know what you are doing. What can one expect when they do LC for the first time?

Thanks all. I appreciate the replies.
I went down to the dealer and got the "official" printed instructions. The steps are as you describe, I have 1270 miles, and svc completed. BMW instructions also say LC will auto shift up through 5th and will auto disengage after 22 seconds. What I was doing wrong was trying LC before everything got completely up to correct operating temp. Doh! So, drove the car about 5 miles to a level (and empty) parking lot, let it idle for a few more minutes, did the preflight routine and viola! BANG!!! SWOOSH!!! GONE!!! Even on the Pirelli winters it launches and shoots out of the hole! I can't wait to try this at the track with the proper tires! |
