I have driven both the E92 M3 and F13 M6 (previously owned an E46 M3, now own a F13 M6, and drove a F10 M5 180 mph on the autobahn and raced it at Limerock), and to drive the M6 fast one has to manhandle it bit more, and be prepared to feel like you are driving more on the edge. I was at Limerock in October (where they did not have M6's, only M3's, M5's and 1 Series M's), but in an F10 M5 I was easily catching the E92 M3's.
I'd agree with this too, as the extra TQ really helps out on any section of track that has some length or the option for a quick run-up to a higher speed. But there is a two-fold problem with the M6: 1) The need to haul in the extra 500lbs during braking and 2) dealing with the additional weight in some corners where it is working against you. Was evident at M School, as well as at Ascari in Spain, which is much larger than Spartanburg. We drove the M5 and the M3 there and the former had its share of weight-related issues. Again, once putting power down the bigger car was fantastic but keeping speed through some corners was WAY more difficult vs. the M3.

I think one of the instructors said, and I am paraphrasing - the M3 just fits like a well made suit. I totally agree with this...just instills confidence and is, IMO more fun to drive on the track.

Any way you slice it though, for how big the M5/6 are they really do handle pretty damn well. And are a hoot to drive!

Sounds like you all had a great M School experience. I enjoyed my M School last year, albiet with the E60 M5.

I also did the Lime Rock Experience with the F10 M5. The M5 was certainly fast on that track but I did enjoy the M3 more. It does fit like a well tailored suit on track. Unfortunately I couldn't get my M5 videos to work to compare times but the M3 videos worked at both locations so I have them uploaded here:
https://vimeo.com/user329303/videos

Unfortunately I am M-less at this time but my current track car is a 335is. Some of those videos are online as well.

Great write up. I had a similar experience in 2009 with the last gen M5/6, and swore I'd get an M3 before it went out of production, and I ended up getting mine while y'all were drive to lunch after the M studio tour. I need to go back to the school to try out the new cars, but I'm afraid it will be another expensive school as I'll want to add another ///M to the stable.

Glad y'all had so much fun!

definitely a great write up and in depth review. this is really valuable to potential buyers.

as you mentioned the "issues" with the M6, I couldn't agree more. My friends has an orange one and i sat in the car. he doesnt want to seat more than 2 people in the car. It is an eye catcher no doubt but that car attracts some unwanted attention being that colore..... he already got keyed.......
I think the problem with this car is that BMW tried whatever worked on the M5 and then simply moved to the M6. It is lighter but not that light. your point about the exhaust is one of the points that's really magnifies the "problem" of the M6. BMW tried to save money and they did. M6 should out perform the M5 significantly otherwise what's the point of buying M6 besides the looks and exclusiveness? and the M6 GC is even heavier than the M6.... ugh....
now BMW is still testing the new M3 which is a good thing!

I think the Perfect M car for the track would be this combo E46 M3 chassis with S65 engine running stand alone. just my opinion, that's it.

RPIM5, great write up. At what speeds were you doing when you stood on the breaks. Also, can you tell us if you experienced or heard any break squealing or screeching like other M5 owners have complained about?

The BMW Performance Driving School was one of the best experiences of my life. I can't say that enough. Absolutely everything was top notch. I went Summer 2010.

Who were the instructors for the ///M school? Just wondering.

Glad you guys did this and posted about it. Looks like a ton of fun...actually I know it is.

105-120 on the back straight for the big course competition. Straight to 100% ABS lockup on the brakes. No squealing at all. Violent stopping power. I was so impressed with the braking ability of these monsters, and learning this technique of hard braking (so simple and effective). There seemed to be a bit of fade towards the end of sessions...and lots of white smoke shooting out of the wheel wells

I think this combo you refer to is going to be called the F82 M4. If BMW makes it as light or lighter than the E46 combined with the power of the S65 engine and 100 more ft/lbs of torque, we'll have a real track destroyer on our hands.

Actually I have thought about a career in automotive journalism should my plans on being a diplomat not work out. Perhaps Car & Driver or something like that. I really want that diplomatic immunity though! Haha!

^this...not to mention, on the long track sessions multiple 80+ MPH full ABS braking per lap. LOTS of white smoke!

Even on the tighter ///M school course, the instructors told me the M5 is about 1.5-2s faster than the M3 on the long course used at the end of day 1. The instructor's general consensus was that people like the M3 because it's lighter and has less torque to get in trouble with. Polling the instructors, it was about 50/50 between the M5 and M3 as far as what they preferred.

The ///M school- driving experience sounds like a ton of fun.

Looks like you all should schedule some track time at a local bmwcca hpde (if you haven't already done so). Sure, it's your car on track instead of someone else's, but the its a ton of driving time at your skills limit (while raising your skills).

Rob///M5 already did a hpde with the local CCA. He can speak on the experience.
