Post BMW M CEO: M5 / M6 with Optional AWD May Come in Next Generation

BIMMERPOST NEWS
BMW M CEO: Next Gen BMW M5 / M6 May Feature Optional AWD

BMW M always claims that it subscribes to no dogmas while considering all possibilities in developing new models. That now includes the possibility of all-wheel-drive M5 and M6 models.

In a recent interview with Motoring, BMW M CEO Dr. Friedrich Nitschke acknowledges that "I've looked at the numbers and 70 to 80 percent of E63 AMGs are all-wheel drive in the US now."

He then confirms that: "On our cars we are thinking of all-wheel drive, but it won’t come before we get the successor of the M5 and M6." "That’s the timing and it's not practical to react in the current life cycles."

Which M models will potentially see an AWD option? "The M5 and M6, maybe in the next generation they could get AWD, but not with the M3 or M4. Never," says Nitschke.

If you're a RWD fan, fret not, as the BMW CEO confirms that any AWD system would be optional as he understands that most M buyers prefer rear-wheel drive.

There's much to like about this news as it potentially gives owners in wintery climates a AWD option, as well as satisfying owners desiring more traction in dealing with the M5/M6's monstrous power. Yet, there will still be a RWD model for the more traditional lot of us.

The earliest we may see a AWD M model will be 2017-2018, when the next generation M5 and M6 arrive.

Sounds like it's going to be interesting, I personally prefer RWD.. But AWD will probably really help with 0-60 times and quarter miles.

Hmm, I don't know... the M division has no R&D budget, so how would they even come up with this? http://f10.m5post.com/forums/showpos...1&postcount=10

To be honest, this is probably a great decision and marketing play... AWD is like automatic transmissions -- to the purists, it's a sin... but its the future and the way every high-performance car manufacturer is going.
I think this option will further advance the M5 as the luxury supersport sedan, and keep the M3/4 as the highly trackable fun car/entry level performance machine.

My question is which one is going Hydrogen-powered first?

To this, Nitschke reaffirms M's stance on RWD: "Our philosophy in regards to steering feel and precision is that rear-wheel drive is the best solution," ... "xDrive brings an 80-90kg weight penalty and the M differential is the industry's best rear-drive set-up."

I wonder if it would drift?

If he made a poll from all ///M owners in the world (not on this forum) in 2013, I think he would be very surprised. How few can actually tell the difference between an AWD and RWD car, a turbo and N/A car and even fewer who actually track, drifts and drive their cars in such a way that RWD would be more advantageous or fun to an AWD. I think they would prefer to feel the AWD's acceleration, stability, practicality and kicking ass from traffic lights instead. I'm not in that category, but I know many current gen M5/M6 owners who are and they are many.

Often there are situations when mainstream cars beat M5 F10 at traffic lights. Times when arrogant people in SUVs beat you at a traffic lights and gloat over your failure when you want to chase him, put the window down and start yelling "EXCUSE ME! HEY WAIT! IN FACT YOU DIDN'T WIN! I LOST BECAUSE I HAVE RWD AND CAN'T PUT ALL 560 HP DOWN PROPERLY! PLEASE FOLLOW ME TO HIGHWAY IF YOU HAVE TIME"

What are you talking about? I do that all the time. Unfortunately most people don't have the time to follow me to the freeway. Lol!

I'll never buy an AWD M5 though.

I'll gladly keep getting beat by those Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8's from a dig. I'm one of those guys who would rather drive their M5 like this...

this completely contradicts what he said officially just a few months ago (see: http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=805747) about never doing AWD in M5. next statement will be m3/m4 will also offer AWD. stay tuned.

Exactly, I don't see the point of an official saying the word 'never' when so many fundamentals of ///M changed and continue to do so. IMO they might as well go with AWD option for all models and continue producing and improving E92 for ///M enthusiasts similar to how Gelandewagen G classkeeps being produced

My kids play that! ;D it's crazy but quite fun too! On a second thought that video isnt actually too far from M5's launch from a dig

If I had AWD, I wouldn't be too worried when I had to deal with those last week.

In NYC/NJ I literally can't find a non-X Drive F30 to test drive.

Yes, but BMW has a serious track record in violating their own holly mantras over and over again: no diesels ever, no automatics in M's ever-never, no FWD ever... , no forced inductions ever since it ruins the gas response, bla-bla-bla-bla-bla.

BMW is the dumbest lying moron brand of all times. I knew that M would also fall for AWD soon, I just knew it when this guy was lying through his teeth back then stating they never would! Jack-ass!

They still produce some good cars, but why do they have to lie to us all the time and address us all of the time like retarded morons?

On the other hand, it seems rather logic that you consider AWD when you want to put down the power of a nuclear power plant on some square inches of rubber. I just can't get my head around why they keep lying to us?

If BMW can come up something like the AWD system found in GTR, then why not?
Better all round car even for snow, and it can still slide.

When BMW says never, all they really mean is in the near future, they have gone back on never's 10 times already. Bad PR they should just keep their lips closed.

That may be the case only because I don't think BMW will keep a manual option in the next-generation M5, but there's nothing preventing an AWD car from having a manual.

AWD M5.... LOL. Where is this world going. Well, as long as it's optional.

Goodness, so from the multiple possibilities discussed, it seems the next M5 may be AWD and will not come in a manual option. I'm going to say that I dislike the direction BMW M is heading. They're selling out!!!!!

Before it was AMG and Audi trying to copy BMW, now it seems that BMW is checking off a checklist of similar options and specifications to match MERC and Audi. SAD!

The new BMW is that they'll do anything for money and increased sales.
