Video: BMW M5 Competition Package: A Better Driver's Car? By Motortrend

BIMMERPOST

Quote:
This week on Ignition, Carlos Lago tests the BMW M5... again! This time around it has something called the Competition Package, which adds a host of small adjustments and improvements in an effort to improve the car's performance and the satisfaction it gives to its driver. Is more power and a recalibration of the suspension and steering enough to make this incredible sedan behave? We find out on the test track at Hyundai's Proving Grounds.

Spot-on Review. It's odd to me everyone talks about HP first, when its the Torque increase starting at 5000 RPM that matters. I also think the CP proves itself through the cornering improvements.

Very fair and accurate review (although repetitive at times). Adds fuel to the fire for MY12/13 adopters who crave better handling

Interesting. I'd love to get the CP out on the track to see how much it differs from my '13.

I hope they have this at the Advanced M Driving School at VIR.

Also wonder why a NJ license plate was on the car. That track looked a far way from NJ

It needs to be at the very least 500 pounds lighter. It would make the overall driving experience so much more pleasurable. Could you imagine with the specs it has now what it would feel like without 2 obese people sitting in the back seat?

Has anyone on these boards tried to lose some weight on their M5s? Very interested to know the highest weight loss 'programs' people put their cars on.

How much time behind the wheel of an M5 do you have to judge its pleasurability?

I think IND did some significant weight loss mods to their F10 M5.

The new M5 is just awesome, there's nothing left to say beyond that quite frankly.

But, that under steer that he mentions, again and again, its the result of the legal staff dictating the alignment specs, and not uncommon, among any car maker. I have a feeling that some additional neg camber in the nose of that beast would delineate the majority of that trait.

And going to upset those who just got their new cars without it for their "reasons" who say the CP makes handling and traction "worse"-blah blah blah. This stuff is so funny. It is definitely an improvement on several levels. If even slightly, it is STILL an improvement. Most improvements in the performance realm are small. However, to those who place stock in performance, they are meaningful.

Now, for lots of people that truly don't CARE then it is prob. not worth the money. I certainly get that. Many just LOVE the car stock and do occasional fast runs. For them, it is everything it should be and MORE stock.

For those that DO care and claim to "drive" the car hard and fast, we will hear half-page long explanations about why they "did" and "didn't" like it so we "understand" their mistake....uh....decision in not ordering it. Let's face it, people who TRULY drive their cars hard and for all they're worth, want to get every small ounce of performance out of them. For goodness sake, we have people who argue all day about 3 hp gained form a new air filter and 15 hp gains from an exhaust. You can't tell me that they wouldn't want the better all-around engine performance, precise steering and handling improvements....yeah right.

I think this review just reinforces the need to self-evaluate the type of "driver" you are. Neither choice is wrong. The car is amazing stock. The most amazing in its class. The CP just one-ups it.

loving Sakir on this video.

only thing missing from the review is the difference in exhaust. the CP is noticeably louder and much nicer sounding, slightly higher octave, at the weekend I.m going to record it. it's a real highlight and I don't think I'm going to go down the M performance route that I planned when that is available.

the roll, or lack of it on this car is awesome also. on the m11 exit for Colchester there is an awesome bend that I was able to take at 20MPH more than I usually do - fantastic.
