How the 2014 BMW M5 Fared in 2014 Motor Trend Car of the Year Award Evaluation
84
COMMENTS

The 2014 Cadillac CTS was just named Motor Trend Car of the Year 2014, and the 2014 M5 was one of the contenders evaluated for the award (also see how the BMW 4 Series Coupe fared).

Here is how Motor Trend had to say about the 2014 M5. Be sure to check out their list of criteria used, as well as the full list of contenders and finalists at the link above.

Contender: BMW 5 Series
By: Jonny Lieberman

We Like: Abusive amounts of power result in skull-cracking acceleration.

We Don't Like: Hefty, complex, and surprisingly numb.

We were quite excited to get our hands on the updated 528i and the new 535d. We'd had a not-very-loved long-term 528i, and hoped the refresh would fix some of what we didn't like (i.e., stop/start). And we're cuckoo for diesels. Sad to say, BMW couldn't get us either car in time for Car of the Year. It did, however, happen to have the new M5 Competition lying around. For $7300 over the $95,125 base price, you get an additional 15 hp; a new, sportier-sounding exhaust system; 10mm-lower ride height from a revised suspension; and 20-inch lightweight alloy wheels. If that seems a little for a lot, it is. Especially considering that you still have to pay an additional $9250 for the carbon-ceramic brakes.

However, said Evans, "It's definitely better than the last M5 I drove." Loh liked this uprated M5, too: "I can say I'd rather have this over the M6." And it's handsome. Said Kiino, "Looks the part. Bulging fenders set over big wheels and huge carbon brakes give it a menacing, powerful look." While the Competition version of the M5 does help the car scoot along better, the old flaws are there. Chiefly, it feels as if you're driving a bank vault with a speedometer that constantly reads 100 mph. Said Theodore, "Deceptively quick, which can get you into trouble. Every time I looked down, I was doing over 100 mph." But the issue isn't speed, which we like. It's that you're way too isolated from said speed. Then there's the whole programmability problem. Kiino put it rather harshly: "Just give me a sport mode or two, but not the 50 million combinations of throttle, steering, transmission, and suspension. Ridiculous and overwhelming." (243 for those who are counting.) The Competition package definitely raises the M5's game, but for the F10 5 Series, it's a case of too little too late.

I love it when I read features that some journalists label negative aspects, and realize that those things they don't like are precisesly what I do like about a car.

Car gets to 100MPH too easily? - yeah that is a big complaint for people buying high performance cars

Car has multiple combination of buttons for different performance and driving configurations? - ever look in a racecar?

It's time to give car of the year back to the accord or taurus I guess....

Every time I heard journalists moan about the too many combinations, I wondered why that was an issue; didn't really get it until I got my car. Now that I have it, I know why they're saying it. It's because they're fucking retarded.

What here is difficult to understand? Three settings each for throttle, suspension, steering, and tranny. Makes perfect sense to me - and I do move around in the settings a good bit depending on how I feel like driving. I think it's great - I'd actually prefer they separated out transmission shift speed from rpm into two settings so you can pick to have lightning fast shifts, but perhaps not hold gear as long as it does in D3. Of course, I suppose then these morons' heads would explode.

Everytime I see the word motortrend I know it's going to be biased against the BMW... Seriously so much whining about great features. Watched some reviews yesterday with M5 comp package for example and they were trying so hard to make it sound negative it became awkward. And then in the comparo for the other car they start making up feelings about things unfathomable to human kind... it's ridiculous.

"Bulging fenders set over big wheels... give it a menacing, powerful look."

The M5 doesn't have any wider fenders than the standard F10, Motor Trend

Edit: I got told. Front fenders are wider.

The M5's feeling of isolation from the road has been a recurring theme amongst reviewers.

So the weak points of this car is having too much configurations that can be chosen, and being fast..... are they kidding?
Maybe the problem here is that BMW paid them less than competitors. I can't really figure out why the M5 is so heavy that they compare it to a bank vault, and the E63 AMG is good (4,389 lb vs 4048 lb).

The RS6 weight 4,431 lb so it's the whole segment that has grown in weight. In this context the M5 it's not a bad car, it's the reviewer that can't understand what "luxury sedan" means.

Steering feel and weight, BMW needs to address these STAT! That's all I hear and read in all new BMW car reviews.

Hey man, these users clearly have more knowledge and experience than these journalists that happen to only do this for a living (under controlled scenarios, no less)!

Let's just call them idiots for objectively rating and evaluating each car.

I feed off the fanboy tears.

Just the same as when BMW introduced I-Drive. Journos thought it too complicated and preferred the old school stuff. Now that I have had two cars with I-Drive I wouldn't change back. It's so much better and easier to use than so many of the other cars I drive. It just takes a bit to adapt to.

Maybe BMW should make special edition models just for journalists with a very limited choice menus and big buttons for some features...

Front fenders ARE wider than standard F10. Rear quarter panels are the same though.

+1

I still don't understand why 80% of BMWs tested on MotorTrend are given to Jonny Liberman. Sure, the M5 is not perfect, but Liberman always seemed to have something against BMW, and he loves to over exaggerate the M5's flaws.

Next time they should give it to Carlos Lagos. He is not biased towards BMWs, but he gives very honest reviews about them.

The review does make some good points. Why does the competition package cost as much as it does? Effectively, no part included in the package is any more expensive to manufacture than the base product (aside from 20's). So why does it cost that much for the package?

The CCB is something you have to want, and you are going to pay through the nose for whatever car you get CCB with.

Then you have posts stating that the article claims going 100 mph is a problem. Those people obviously can't read.

Take a review for what it is. One person's opinion.

Dude you are so mistaken... the front fenders are wider on the M5 than regular F10s.

I dont get "skull cracking acceleration" and "numb". They just said SKULL CRACKING ACCELERATION.

I know what they mean but just wanted to point that out.
