My BMW M5 Welt delivery

Hello all.
Sorry about the multiple posts. Trying to do this in an airport lounge. I have some photos of my new M5 and super quick trip to Munich. I had only one full day for driving....as it turns out, and as you'll see below, I wish I had just dropped it off at the Welt when I picked it up.

So I made my way to Munich and picked up my new M5 on Monday. Had a great day at the Welt. As my appointment time drew ever closer I found myself spending more and more time on the balcony in the premium lounge waiting for my first glimpse. Well, eventually she made her debut. Here's my car being driven off the elevators to the delivery floor...

MCB

The delivery guy, Wolfgang, was very nice. Showed me a lot of the features (some of which I was unaware of.....namely the Mafia/ dead body in the trunk feature)

He also recommended a route that was ideal for a day of driving. He even programmed it into the navigation......

Great first impression

Thanks to all you guys. I gleaned a lot of knowledge from your combined wisdom. Even so, I was well and truly blown away when I met her for the first time. No photos do this car justice. Seeing it in person, the way I spec'd it was awesome.....

Full SO leather

I'd actually never seen the SO before I picked up the car in Munich. Happy to report that it is beautiful. Somewhat more subtle than the photo indicates....

And now for the Horror....

I drove the route the delivery guy at the Welt recommended. It was beautiful country. Great way to get acquainted with my new ride. Just outside Kochel am See......disaster. A guy on a motorbike (It would have to be a BMW, of course) overtook a tractor and lost control. Unfortunately for all my car was in the way. Yes, my less than 1 day old car got bashed. The bike rammed the front left fender, the guy himself ended up on the hood with his helmet smacking into the windshield. After a moment of stunned silence I jumped out to check on him. Thankfully, other than a lot of severe shaking, he was alright. I was going slow and managed to break fully before he hit.

The tractor

Here's a picture of the tractor that the biker overtook....

Now I don't speak German and this is not the middle of Munich. The tractor driver didn't speak a word of English but I could tell he was pissed at the biker. I insisted we call the police and the farmer did. As the road was totally blocked now it wasn't fairly long before there were 10 cars backed up on both sides. Everyone in the cars came up to have a look see.

The cops showed up about 30 minutes later (much to everyone's relief).

And here's where what I had thought was a complete disaster turned around.

The cops were very nice. Spoke to me in English. One if them asked me when I got the car.. "Yesterday" I said. "Shit only happens at the start, then all good" he says. The other cop immediately started to spray paint around the bikes skid marks and then came up to me and said this was the bikers fault given that the skid marks showed he was in the middle of the road, speeding and the farmer was telling the cops he was overtaking in a dangerous manner.

The bike

When the cops arrived one of them checked it over. It was in 3rd gear and when he stood it up he again said it further proved he was way out of lane.

The aftermath

The cops took information from both of us. He issued an on-the-spot fine to the biker and informed me that as it was the bikers fault his insurance would be paying in full. The biker was also issued a formal warning. I got a full police report- and boy am I glad I insisted he didn't move that bike. There were a few people in the cars behind us who wanted to move it so they could be on their way.

I have to say the cops were great. So was the farmer. Very impressed by their professionalism and courtesy. After all was said and done they wanted to check out the 'm fumpf'. They were driving an X3... I told them I was happy they were buying American cars....got a good laugh from them.

This morning I dropped it off with the LogInOut crew at Munich airport. I was, to say the least, a little apprehensive.

The lady was very helpful. She took copies of the police report and said it's no big deal. The car will ship to NJ as usual and it will be fixed there. She's sent the photos of damage ahead so they can have the new parts ready.

So, all in all...a bit of a roller coaster but everything turned out good.

Now I just have to be patient while I wait for the rede livery stateside.

Good that there were no injuries. One must be very careful and be very vigilant when driving especially in the Alps passes. Something that I keep in mind is what a German friend told me while driving in Germany and most of Europe. He said that cops are not particular about the speed one is doing but rather if one keeps enough distance which during my ED probably helped me avoid accidents. While on the road from Austria to Switzerland doing the Bernina pass I was following a car with German plates who just suddenly decided to stop in the middle of the road -- don't know if he had problems with the car and it just stalled, I had to slam on the breaks to avoid a collision. Had I not kept enough distance, I would have hit him especially so since it was raining and the roads were slick. So best thing to always do while driving is to "Keep Distance".
Anyway, accidents do happen and I am sure your car can be fixed almost like new.

Beautiful car! Love the color combo! What an unfortunate situation, but glad you and the biker are okay. Hope that did not ruin the M5 experience too early on for you

Sorry to hear what happened. But glad that you got a good meeting with the German police and that no one was badly injured

Nice to see that you actually managed to joke with the police about the X3 being built in the US

And finally......it's redelivered........

So, 73 days after drop off in Munich I got my M5 redelivered on Friday last. It's as good as the day I picked her up at the welt.

The repairs were carried out at the VPC in NJ....it took, what seemed, forever. Apparently there was a long delay waiting for an insurance assessor.

Here's some pics.....

Congrats on redelivery! She's good as new and I LOVE the color combo!

On another note, it looks like there's some texture on the leather on the doors, near the trim. On my '13 it's smooth, like on the steering wheel. Am I seeing this right?

I see you are wearing jeans on that SO seat. Better get the seats treated or quit wearing jeans because they will stain the leather indelibly.

On our new Porsche we have Black and Guards Red seats and we got the seats treated with Perma Plate which is likely a scam but we will also take the precaution of not wearing blue jeans in that car.
