If I understand your question properly, try this:
On nav screen, push iDrive knob to the right to highlight the split screen options. Press the knob to enter the option screen. Here there are lots of choices, such as the detailed lane view (can't remember exact name) which shows you a drawing of the exit lanes when nearing a change in your route.
Whichever choice you make here will now show on the right side of the split screen while driving.
