Unsprung weight is the combined weight of the wheels, tires and brakes, and a lower unsprung weight means the suspension can do a better job of keeping the tires in contact with the pavement. You have to understand that the job of the car's suspension is to keep the tires in contact with the pavement, not "suspending" the car, to understand this benefit.
