They used to have much closer numerically numbering before. Today they have a numbering sequence that allows only one model in the same "group".

Before:
E30 - 3-series
E31 - 8-series
E32 - 7-series
E34 - 5-series
E36 - 3-series
E38 - 7-series
E39 - 5-series

New:
E6x - 5/6-series
E9x - 3-series
F0x - 7/5GT series
F1x - 5/6-series
F2x - 1/2-series
F3x - 3/4-series
F8x - M3/M4

They will run out of available series much sooner for each letter designation with the new numbering system. But I don't know why they seem not to be going to use F4x, F5x, F6x, F7x and F9x?
