There's no doubt the software has value. Whether you want to purchase it or use the freeware versions available, that is up to you.
If you compare the $80 software to a quality OBD2 diagnostic scanner there is no doubt which one to go with. Although you can't use ISTA+ with any other vehicle manufacturer to read diagnostic codes other than BMW.
If there is a freeware version that will tell me WTF this code I'm throwing means, then WOOHOO!! That's $80 more towards an exhaust
Do a quick search googling the name of the software and you'll find torrents and forums where they offer free downloads of it. Worth a shot.
