Correct, you'll download the map archive, extract it and place it on a USB stick.
You can use a Mac or PC, however, Mac has a couple special instructions. Since OSX/macOS places hidden files on the drive, they must be cleaned before the navigation can read the USB stick. You can use a utility like Blue Harvest to clean the drive after the map is copied to it.
You'll need a 32gb USB stick or larger. The drive can be formatted as FAT32 or exFAT (exFAT is only supported on the NBT navigation system on 2013+ 5-series vehicles).
