Aesthetic, performance, functionality, technology, technology integration with other technologies (sort of like what you pointed out why Nokia phones wouldn’t work today), reliability, value retention, and for some vanity etc are all reasons. Who the heck wants to spend the same amount of money to buy the same car with less options. Adding weight, enlarging the cabin space isn’t something driven by bmw or other manufacturers designers, it’s actually driven by us - consumers demand. For 1, people are bigger than before, have more kids, kids are bigger, more people have more shit, and all kinds of unnecessary shit anyone can or cannot think of are being sold and sadly we buy them, so more shit in the car. Then we want comfortable seats 6 adjustable not enough, we want 12,15…you get my point. Everything requires a module, all that means weight. But for bmw, they have to think how the heck do I incorporate all of that shit while maintaining or improving performance. Xdrive…
I’m sure none of these consumer demands mean a thing to you. And that’s totally ok. But note that manufacturers do not make their products based on a few scales if individual preferences, and as I referenced people, I meant the vast majority of consumers, the market which is the target to maximize their profitability.

i say this again... outside of carplay (which can be retrofitted to most cars) and the introduction of EVs (which are barely selling right now)... there haven't been many innovations to cars that change the experience or how a car drives... if people want the newest flashiest thing at a cost, that is there prerogative but outside of that... there is nothing stopping anyone from driving a 20 year old car... in fact, the average age of cars in the USA on the roads is 13 years old which even predates car play and this age goes up every year...
this has nothing to do with cell phone tech development which renders old phones useless on our networks, outside of any internet usability, security etc... your comparos are not like and make 0 sense at all
