It's usually the condenser that leaks then the a/c gradually fails, like mine did when I first bought the car and yes on the hottest day too. In your case an o-ring seal may have failed in a connecting pipe to the compressor if that's from where the gas leak was emanating from or the pipe is simply worn out or cracked. You have to track down that replacement pipe and get your a/c mechanic to fit it and then re-gas the system if you don't want to take it to your nearest BMW service centre.
