That's odd behavior in neutral. In neutral mine just falls to idle RPMs. If you put it in the gate for the gear, it instantly blips up or down to what it needs. You can make a car with loud exhaust make lots of "engine noise" when you downshift coming to a stop...but that's not the best way to take care of the car, should put it in neutral and use the brakes instead of engine braking, but I can't help the cool noises a lot of the time.
