I think one of the problems is that we are used to horsepower readings at the wheels, such as on a dynojet. At least that is how BMS reports the gains but Dinan uses the measurement at the crank. Also, unless i missed them, I can't find actual dyno charts on the Dinan website. I know assessing a tune isn't just as simple as max HP and torque gains but it can give you a general idea of the improvements.
I looked at some of the posts regarding Dinan tunes over at Bimmerfest and while some people are happy, there are quite a few people that are underwhelmed with their Dinan tune. Maybe they are expecting more because of the crank horsepower claims, incorrect installation, etc.
Just like anything else, do your homework before selecting a tune.
By the way, the local BMW dealer is an authorized Dinan installer so I am not sure how removing the tune will do you much good if the BMW dealer actually performed the install.
