I was torn between an M3 CP and an M5. I drove both an opted for the M5. No doubt it's the bigger car having spent 4 years in an F30 but the M5 drives like a 520 when I want it to be docile and a cruise missile when I want to chase the horizon. It's effortless and with much less drama than its smaller 6 cylinder siblings but the Boise from the V8 is orchestral. I love the rumble. Living in the UK, we don't have many big block V8 cars that make that kind of noise. I love the uprated seats, the sunroof, soft close doors, B&O sound - things I couldn't have on an M3/M4. But I can see the attraction for the M3/4 if you prefer more on the limit driving - given the size and mass of the F10.
My advice is drive both before you choose as it's very much personal choice. Though neither is a bad car in any way.
