Mine was making the noise you described, and it ended up being I had a rear differential leak. Once the rear diff seal and fluid was replaced, the noise disappeared. I asked the tech if there was any indication of wear in the gears from low fluid, and he said no. Hopefully yours is a very simple fix as mine was.

For what it’s worth, BMW 120+ point inspection is hit or miss depending on the dealership. They’ll sell you a tuned car that was beat up to make money if they can get away with it.
