I use Castrol Edge 0W30, which is the recommended weight for UK M5s. I always carry a spare 1L bottle in the boot but I bought 8L fairly cheaply from Asda recently so I use that to top up if I can get home shortly after the warning comes up.

Thanks for your reply, i had read about in between services not being put on the idive, i find this a bit crazy. Anyway i'm thinking of never going to BMW as much as i would like it to show on the service menu on idrive. Castrol Edge 0W30 it is.

This isn't true I have a yearly oil change and they put it on the I drive when I ask

What they don't do is reset the service indicator
