Take a look at the M-sport E9X and M3. There is a massive difference between the two. Essentially, the M3 is an entirely different car. M-sport is still aggressive, but there is a fine line between two cars. The difference between M-sport E60 and the old M5 is even more drastic.

I think the problem with the 5er this time is BMW made the M-sport too aggressive, and the M5 doesn't look anything more than that. It's not that the car looks bad, its just that M5 does not look like anything that justifies the 20-30k price difference. It's really the fault of 550, not the other way around.
Whole point of the M5 is that the visual differences are supposed to be subtle. Hard to notice until you press the gas pedal. That has always been the case with the M5 and not so with the M3.
