Lean mixture is bad news especially on turbo cars, you get detonation. Knock sensors, o2 sensors and a good DME can keep you going for a while but you really have to get that sorted out as soon as it appears.
If BM3 tune leaned out the mixture even further than you had just prior, that could have been the trigger. But may have just going to happen anyway given time.
