My advise to a noob is always get extended warranty.

Here in the UK anyway, if car has full bmw service history you can plug the plate into a website for the premium. Around £50 a month and £250 excess in my case gets most issues sorted at the dealer without hassle.

I would definitely check if the service history of the car you're about to buy is legitimate by calling the dealers that serviced it over the years and also confirm with them & the warranty company, the car has never had warranty work denied.
