It's not a matter of fitting or not, but more like a safety or performance issue I guess. Manufacturers give recommended values for a reason.
Hella flush guys have been running stretch tires for years but is it safe? Somewhat I'd say. If you go the other way and run too large, the tire might not perform as well as it should on a recommended wheel width.
