At some point BMW discontinued 5w30 and our car received recommended 0w30. Since then 5w30 is back. I am in norcal and have been running exclusively 5w30 from BMW , one of the reasons is the this oil has really low NOACK. If you don't know what NOACK is, "The Noack volatility of an oil is defined as the weight loss of the oil when it is held under isothermal conditions at 250 °C for a period of up to one hour, depending on result collected from the reference material, under a constant flow of nitrogen."

So even tho you might use good brand synthetic oil, if the NOACK is high you might be burning more oil.
