I would check the codes again after a few days and see what comes back. If you have diagnostic software, you can probably activate the aux fan manually and at each speed. If the problem is intermittent like you say, then this test won't tell you much if everything is working.

Unlike most other BMW's, our DME's are mounted "externally" and as such, they don't have their own specific cooling fans like other cars do inside of a box.

I also mirror the sentiment above. Don't let this go for too long as the electric fan combines with the electric water pump in the turbo cooling circuit to keep everything from heat soaking. You could develop turbo issues over time. That said, you would probably have to run the engine hot many times over to start causing issues like coked up oil lines, etc.
