For me, it was the right move. I'm older (71), the M3 was a bit difficult for me to get in and out of, and I always had the feeling it wanted me to drive it ... what's the phrase ... in a "spirited" manner.
Think of the M3 as a bantamweight MMA fighter and the M5 as a heavyweight boxer. The M3 is quicker and of course, the noise is irreplaceable. That said, the M5 is comfortable for a full-grown family of four, makes huge gobs of power, and is overall a smoother driving experience. Just loafing along at about 2500 RPM (IIRC) and 100 mph is effortless.
I also went from a 2009 to a 2013, so there's more tech, which I like. And the B&O sound system, although I would not have paid $3700 when new, is really good.
Really good, if you care about things like that.
The M5 I found was $106k when new, so I'll take that kind of depreciation any day. I immediately bought an extended warranty for it, so I'm good for 4/50.
The more I drive it, the smaller it feels, but it'll never have that nervous "Can we go? Can we go now? Faster? Can we go faster now?" attitude that the M3 has.
Those are my overall reactions. Let me know if there's a specific comparison in which you're interested.
Happy New Year!
