Happened to me a month after I got my Z4 in 2003..
April is the worst time for that - left over sand and small stones on the roads from winter sanding, picked up by truck tires whcih cause stone chips in the paint of your car and/or chips in the windshield - if you are following too closely.
You'll also discover that BMW windshields chip very easily.. They appear to be made from the finest Bohemian crystal and shatter as easily..
The only thing you can do is stay the hell way back (like 1/2 mile or more) from trucks on the 400 series highways..
