I think the photos may be giving an optical illusion by playing tricks to the eye. The sleeves pictured have no lip above the block surface. Once the sleeves are installed, the block is then decked to make sure everything is flat for a good sealing surface. Most sleeves have a lip that is cut into the block that prevent the sleeve from falling or dropping down making contact with the crankshaft. This lip will help recess the top of the sleeve into the block.

The best thing about sleeving a motor is that as long as everything is ok with the block and its just normal wear you can remove the sleeves and resleeve the block again.

To sleeve a block does take time and lots of experience, only select engine builders know how to do this properly.

We have sleeved quite a few engine blocks for racing purposes, it does take high quality materials and R&D to do it correctly
