Before he retired, my Dad was in the car business for his whole career. He worked for the car manufacturer, but his job was to be the corporate interface and third-level engineering support to all the dealer service departments in his region (in his case, for Subaru of America).
He’s related to me on a number of occasions that service depts. have a regular practice of recommending premature replacement of items if they think the customer/car won’t be back in time to replace the item on schedule. It’s partly a CYA/liability tactic and partly out of respect for the customer’s time (to not to have to call them back for yet another service appointment). Even so, the dealer representative should be up-front about it: “hey, we think your tires have about 7,500 miles left on them but we expect we won’t see you for at least another 10,000 miles, so we’re recommending you replace the tires now.” That’s way more honest than claiming the tires are far more worn than they really are.
