Drag Strip Times for my F10 M5
I finally hit the drag strip yesterday afternoon/early evening with my F10 M5. The only mods I have are Supersprint race mufflers and K&N drop-in air filters. The M5 had about 5/8 tank of gas. The weather was about 82 degrees on my first run (plugging in the data at 75-80 Dragway shows DA of 2,000'+). I did two runs BOTH WITHOUT LAUNCH CONTROL and without touching the tire pressures. I also weigh 240lbs (my mom says I am not fat...just big boned). I had intended on trying LC but the guy in the left lane staged too quickly the first time and the tree was coming down right after I finished staging and I felt rushed (the second time I staged first but the same guy took his time and I figured it would just time out anyway so I didn't even bother). Anyway the results...
Run #1: 11.835 @ 120.87 mph (with 1.981 60' time) Run #2: 11.903 @ 120.67 mph (with 1.940 60' time) I have had faster cars (tuned '05 CL65, full bolt-on /tuned GT-R and CTS-V with bolt-ons/tune), but NONE faster with just drop-in filters and mufflers. Just for comparisons sake my best time in the CL65 (with drop-in air filters and stock tires) was 12.478 @ 118.08 mph in similar summer weather. My '09 CTS-V ran on the same track in similar conditions with a full custom cat-back and K&N drop-in filters a 12.356 @ 115.2 mph. I never ran the GT-R without a tune but even with a Cobb generic 93 octane tune, mid pipe and drop-in filters (and no LC) it ran 11.552 @ 122.17 mph but also in much cooler conditions. The M5 really impressed me last tonight. I didn't think I would crack 12s or 120mph and it did both pretty easily. To be honest I just mashed the throttle off idle, the car bogged the first 20' and then it just took off with no other drama and I let the DCT do all the shifting. So the results should not be attributed to any great skills of mine...in fact if a lighter driver took the helm and used launch control...it could probably have run an 11.5X @ 122+mph. |

What did you do with the traction control btw - mdm or completely off? Impressive times, man - I'd love to join you next time - but my wife keeps the schedule pretty packed - I need a few days notice. Thanks |

My wife informed me earlier in the day that she was going over to her sister's place and then out with her friends...so I figured I would take advantage of a Friday night to myself. |

Each time I went up I really thought I was going to try launch control so I figured I needed to keep it in MDM. I also figured I would rather have traction control cut in rather than just go nowhere and spin... |

I like the active diff but the lockup is not entirely impressive from a dig... but it works great coming out of turns.

You need traction control entirely off to use launch control

Where did you do this? Can you give some detail as to location, cost?
I would imagine that LC would have made a slight but significant difference. Getting engine speed and boost up before take-off would only have a positive effect on your results due to less lag. Hopefully we'll see some of your LC #'s soon. BTW, with all the great engineers at BMW, why not a simple LC such as Pcar? Really?

i undersrtand what you mean by feeling rushed. but if you just forget about the other car (afterall youre racing against the clock). you might find you can actually arm the lc and launch in the time it takes the tree to count down...
i use it almost all the time now. and i can even get off the line before the other car sometimes ... of course you need one of your m modes set up for s3, traction control off, etc... |

I thought it was with MDM set to the "first" off and not completely off or am misinterpreting how it works?

I ran at 75-80 Dragway in Monrovia MD.... just over the Frederick County border from Montgomery County...about 15 minutes from Germantown. On Friday nights it costs $30 to do test and tunes but you might only get 3 runs if you get there by 6:30 and run through 9:00. Quote:

Those are some great numbers my friend. :-)
Not sure if LC helps much with these cars. You get boost built up but it sure likes to spin with DSC disabled. Thanks for posting! :-)

Good times. Thanks for posting.
The 60' and ET tells the story of the M5's power and potential. It takes just under 2 seconds to get the heavy beast out to 60' and less than 10 seconds to cover the rest of the quarter mile! If LC or better traction can net a 1.75-1.80 60', I believe a ~stock M5 will run an 11.5x. And that is my goal when I next hit the track. |

Post up the next time you plan on hitting the track. I wouldn't mind reliving the old days of sitting in the stands of Capital City Raceway with the oldtimers drinking 40s out of paper bags
