Disappointed by the S63 sound

Hey guys. I have been a little disappointed/ underwhelmed by the sound of the s63 engine. Even with intakes, downpipes and no mufflers I can barely hear the car. There is no v8 growl at idle and even though it gets loud when revved, it’s not v8 loud and still has a “smooth rumble” to it instead of an aggressive growl.

Any idea why? I have had a n63 with the same setup and that actually sounded like a v8. Has a mean growl even at idle. But the m5 doesn’t 🥲

Even at a car show revving an almost straight pipe sounds like a stock corvette lol. I miss the cammed corvette sound

The turbos muffle a lot of sound. You're not hearing the exhaust straight through the pipe - it goes through the turbine first. Also the pulse-tuned cross bank exhaust manifold creates a very unique sound. According to my quick research it looks like the N63 exhaust manifold is set up in a way that each bank feeds its own turbo explaining the difference between the N63 and S63 sound.

Either way an M5 is never going to sound like a Corvette. But that's what makes it special to me - it's a very exotic sound that stands out from all the LSs, Coyotes and Hellcats in the world.

That's right, with this set up the traditional V8 sound is always going to be a has-been.. I've just left the room quick

Can't hear it??? Maybe hearing aids are in order? Mines the same setup and it's loud af.
What tune? My car gunshots on damn near ever shift when driving conservatively and every shift if I push it even a little. BM3 stage 2 aggressive tune, downpipes, stock midpipes/resonators, muffler delete kit, aFE Momentum intakes is my setup. And turbo spool always.

Yeah man. Even in your video you’re backed up against the wall and then you can hear the car a bit, but it’s not really aggressive. Yes it can get loud if you stand right being the exhaust but even then it sounds “muffled” -
even when there’s no mufflers or cats.

That’s the best way to describe it, just sounds like a smooth muffled rumble.

Only thing I don’t have from your setup is the tune with burbles.

Compared to that the Amg engines also sound so good. The c63s, amg gt, even the g wagon. And they also have a twin turbo v8 but they retain the aggressive v8 growl. Why does m5/ s63 not have that at all?

S63 has cross exhaust manifolds they produce a different and high pitched sound so the M5 and M6 sounds more like a flat plane crank V8 than the typical V8 sound you would get from a 550i

Pretty much all M cars sound weak. The performance of the suspension and wheel horsepower is what separates itself from the competition. I have had plenty of American V8s, 5.0s, ZL1, etc., they sound great, but they are all bark and no bite. Even my 2013 M5 outperformed my 2014 ZL1. I always go back to BMW after owning dozens of different sports cars and sedans. M Power!

My favorite thing about the M5 is that it's not obnoxiously loud and looks like an average sedan, it doesn't stick out to law enforcement. You can get away with a lot more with a car like the M5 than a loud muscle car. I haven't been pulled over in a BMW since 2008.

Agree it is fast and handles well, but wish it sounded the part too. The c63s sounds so good and it’s also a twin turbo v8. I miss the feeling of going fast while going fast - the sound being an important part in that feeling. With the m5 you can be going 160 getting a massage and not even hear it - but I guess that’s what’s its made for

The S63 will never have that bub bub bub rumble of a traditional V8 because it uses a flat-plane crank as Hayden mentioned, so it can rev higher than a traditional V8 while having a smaller displacement, if you consider 4.4L small

Does the XPipe really make THAT much of a difference? BMW was clearly trying to retain the high pitched tone of the V10 M5 but left the S63TU underwhelming even with exhaust mods. A lot of people mention X Pipe but does it really deepen the tone? If so.. how much?

From my experience x-pipe will just make the sound “deeper” and remove a little more of the “muffled” sound, but it doesn’t change the pitch or tone much.

Some S63TU setups sound like a 4 cylinder engine.. I have Apex catless DP and valves open on CP exhaust and I’m thinking of getting Eisenmann Axle backs to try to accomplish a deeper tone at higher RPMs

I have had Meisterschaft with catless dp as well , sounded nice, almost the same as a muffler delete. I dont think you’ll get enough difference for it to be worth it.

You're just referring to idle, I assume? Mine, at WOT over 3k rpm turns into a screaming banshee.

Actually at idle sounds more like a V8 than it does over 3k. Yes agreed it may sound like a screaming banshee.. but I much prefer the roar of a big lion. As close as I can get to AMG deep roar the better. I’ll try XPipe. I saw a video the other day a guy did double XPipes on his F10 M5

^ Double X pipes sounds crazy but should do something, chasing after AMG sound whatever you do is unattainable.

Oh I know, I’m still on stock CP exhaust with APEX downpipes. I might try the double X-Pipes apparently it’s a lot more common then I thought. MEKA USA makes a set for the F10 might just do those.

If you should have the double X pipes fitted then put a vid on here to hear what it sounds like
