BMW Motorcycles
Any of you guys have one? They seem to be doing a good job of getting them in front of me since I'm thinking about it and I've never been a motorcycle rider.
Seems like a good way to get more BMW stuff and decrease my life expectancy. A lower life expectancy allows me to decease my retirement savings rate thereby increasing disposable income. I won't bore you with all the calculus, but mathematically speaking buying a dual purposes motorcycle allows you to buy more individual options- like frozen paint. The larger the displacement, the more interior options, custom embroidery etc... Who's with me on this?

I've had BMW motorcycles for 15 years... My first K75 I put 175k miles on with no problems.
BMW are pretty much the top of the line in motorcycles...

have you ever been on a bike or owned one before? where will you primarily ride it (and distances)?
I currently have a R1200RT.. its definitely a sport tourer meant for long comfortable rides, but still has some great maneuverability.

It's the other people on the road that convince me to never own a bike.
Also a '08 M5 convinced me it is a life saver in more than one way.. steering, brakes, and cabin safety.

how close are you to Marietta? go to the BMW bike dealership there... they do have light bikes that are good to start on (like a F650 GS... can take a bit of a beating when you inevitably drop it). Its the same dealership Alton Brown uses/used. I had my bike serviced there when I was living in Alabama.
Other option is to buy a cheap beater bike to learn on... but nothing rides as smoothly as a BMW.

Learning to ride a motorcycle was on my bucket list, so this year I took the plunge, passed the motorcycle training class, and got the M endorsement on my license. At the same time, I also took the plunge on a K1600 GTL. It's a huge bike. Everybody thought I was nuts buying a brand new bike that is totally over my experience level, but, 3000 miles later, it's been nothing but pure pleasure. Yes, it's a lot of bike to handle, especially for a beginner, but I'm doing pretty good... Knock on wood. No mishaps thankfully, but I'm still not comfortable riding in traffic. I tend to ride the back country roads to improve my skills, but now that the weather is getting cool and daylight getting shorter, I'm not riding as much as I would like. Plus, hitting that deer in my beast has now made me a bit weary of any back country roads.
My advice though is to try it! Sign up for the beginner motorcycle riding course. You'll know immediately whether it's for you or not. Even if you don't get a bike, it's a great course. I'm honestly a better driver as a result. If you do get a bike, I wouldn't suggest going big like I did, but do what feels right, even if it is big. Just be aware of all that power between your legs! Ride safely and always always gear up. The K1600 is an awesome bike, BTW! |

Right to the inline 6 big-boy!?! Your nuts to pick that up for your first bike, though it is a very smooth ride.
Check out www.aerostich.com Get yourself a full roadcrafter and some electrics... Combined with the heated seats and grips and you an ride year round as long as there isn't snow or ice on the road.

I'm smitten with the Ducati Diavel, but it's too small for me - I'm 6'3" with long legs and most bikes don't fit right. Thought about looking for peg extenders/etc but ... haven't yet ...
Probably for the best. |

I test rode the Diavel. Holy crap that bike is sweet. Fast, handles well and sounds fantastic. The dealer had the factory race exhaust installed. Damn it's nice. Only reason I didn't buy is because I wouldn't give up either of my other bikes. Still might get one next year. |

Do they have an ED program? Walking around Paris this afternoon, all the shops and people on bikes got me thinking about it.

I was in the same boat a few years ago, saw a BMW HP2 Enduro in the Roundel and thought was very cool so I bought one. it is a dual sport but set up more for off road, I take it mostly up into the mountains and fire roads in Colorado. I don't like riding in traffic, but on back roads and trails it is a lot of fun. HP (High Performance) bikes are to BMW motorcycles what M is to BMW cars.
