M5 Touring - el niño - Part IV is online!
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com TOC: - Part I - Part II - Codieren [koˈdiːrən] – or: rocket science - Part III - Boost and Brakes We finally did it – a new CFD project car is on its way to be launched! After the great success of our last project – the BMW M4R – we had a really hard time deciding in which direction this new project should take us. The only thing that was sure to us, was the notion to make something even bigger and better! So, what’s next? We had a lot of viable ideas for cars of manufacturers from Stuttgart, Wolfburg, Ingolstadt or even abroad. After some heated discussions and round about 100+ changes of heart it was finally clear – the next project car would originate from the manufactureres of BMW. The core of the project is shaped by the S63TU engine, that was a kick for us because of it’s unchallenged potential. Even though the M4R of last year had a great media response, we made 100% sure that this time we would not just take a “standard” car and equip it with different parts from different companies. This time, we are aiming to create something special – a unique and awesome car. To accommodate the birth of our CEO’s son we knew it had to be a wagon with some room. In addition we know that BMW sold the M5 wagon in earlier stages extremely well and stopped production with the E61 M5 in 2010 for unknown reasons. So finally we settled in: we would build worlds first BMW M5R F11 Touring. Since our heads have been wrapped around this idea for quite some time now, of course we did our homework. We knew we would not be able to pull this off alone so we partnered with the best companies of our business – each one of them a specialist in their field! We are extremely happy and very grateful that every partner was excited from the very first, to be a part of our project and put in everything they had, to make this thing come true. Thanks to all you guys! We´ll introduce this project in stages as the amount of content is - big. We hope you enjoy reading. Chapter 1 – a difficult wedding „Start small, persevere in trouble, strive towards the great” Looking for the base car, we had our first moment of disillusionment – there was not a single 550i LCI to be had in the german market. We had to wait for weeks to finally get the chance to strike and purchased our foundation. Even though we probably would have taken it no matter what, the car met almost all our expectations – coming from a BMW dealership in Munich, it was black and came with a very nice interior. The tight deadline for the M5R modification is the Essen Motor Show 2017, where we want to present the car to you and the rest of the world – live and in color! The first and most important partners to hit the car with all their power and expertise will be the gifted mechanichs from Aulitzky Tuning. Everybody that has started a big “project” in their lives should know what is about to come. You put your thoughts into it, make some big plan and are super confident about yourself and how things will develop. The first steps are taken, plans are made and executed. And finally you hit a brick wall that says “things are more difficult than you thought”. Since we are no exception, that’s exactly what happened to us and our project. Euphoria was replaced by a will of steel to see things through no matter what and ended in frustrated very long nights in which we would have loved to put some work in the freaking car with a sledgehammer. It was classic. But – and this is the truth – life just almost never works out the way you plan it. The 550i LCI wagon we bought is in good condition and has a high-quality furnishing. For normal users it would be great car the way it came from the BMW dealership in Munich but – everything has to go! Our partner Aulitzky Tuning picked up the car and tested it for all it was worth. Aulitzky Tuning is seated in the small Bavarian village Neuendettelsau. It is no coincidence that we chose them to be our main partner for this project, since first of all they are specialized on BMW M cars and secondly they presented the world’s first BMW M2 with an M4 engine on the EMS 2016. Aulitzky Tuning modified and enhanced so many BMW Ms that the corporation called them up and made them an official BMW dealer. So if these guys can’t make the heart-transplantation work then nobody would. Dismantling the 550i wagon is the next task at hand. The powertrain is detached, the patient in a slumbering coma. The next thing in line is a M5 engine which was very hard to get. In the end we got lucky and found a complete M5 technical package with eninge, transmission, cardan shaft, front- and hind axis. With a youthful engine, having run only 20.000 KM packed behind us, we head back to the workshop – but this is where the real adventure starts. Meanwhile chaos in the workshop ... Scalpel please! We don’t want to bore you with the tiny details but let us just say – it wasn’t as easy. A lot of parts had to be reworked completely or replaced by individually made ones. The worst headaches were produced by the hind axis. The 550i LCI wagon that we bought had an integral active steering system on the hind axis. Since this is a unique feature of the F11 wagon, it can’t be found in a M5 which produced tons of questionmarks. The M5 back axle carrier doesn’t fit in the wagon-chassis which, together with the differential, had to be reconstructed completely. At this point it was the mid of july and pressure to finish the project was mounting since we needed it to be ready for you guys for the Essener Motorshow 2017. To take some anticipation out for you: You can see the car on our booth at the EMS 2017 2F114! After uncounted adjustments, many many hours of work, fumbling around and a lot of solved small and big problems, there was a light at the end of the oily tunnel! Worlds first BMW F11 M5 Touring with a S63TU engine. From here we will take the next steps that you can all look forward to with us: new turbos from TheTurboEngineers, Movit brakes and A LOT of Coding. Within the next weeks we´ll update this thread for all further steps. Just for those, who don't believe its running Last edited by Maltman; 04-11-2018 at 03:27 PM.. Reason: Part IV |

This is incredible. I've wanted to do this for the longest time but struggled with importing a wagon to the US. Thrilled to see it! Those E63 wagons better watch out!

Exciting to see all the good pictures! I love this type of project, and you're so right....many unseen pitfalls will happen along the way. Is it possible to integrate the S63TU engine into the 550i chassis while retaining all the adjustability and functionality that is available in the M5? Same question for the rear differential, which might be even more of a challenge! The electronics must be incredibly difficult.
Post all of your take apart/tear down pictures even after you have it finished, very informative to see the guts apart! Best of luck with it!! |

I wish BMW would indulge us with weird cars like this.

The excitement for that first start must have been intense! I sincerely enjoy the images, not only for their documenting of the process, but the composition itself. Thanks for sharing.

Couldn't help but have the A-Team soundtrack playing in my head while I scrolled through your photos and can imagine all the hard (But ultimately rewarding) work that must have been put into this build.
